- Meeting Overview:
The Vineland School Board meeting was marked by a milestone as the district announced its highest graduation rate to date at 86.1%, while also honoring district employees who served in the military in recognition of Veterans Day. The board’s discussions revealed a commitment to both academic achievement and community recognition, with various updates on student performance and sports programs.
The meeting opened with a celebration of the district’s increased graduation rate, with aspirations to reach 90% in the coming year. The presentation, led by Mrs. Dena Rodolfo, supervisor for pupil services, detailed the 2023-2024 assessment results, emphasizing the district’s efforts to elevate students from lower performance levels to higher ones. The data highlighted improvements in areas such as mathematics and science, while also identifying sections needing further enhancement. Mrs. Rodolfo outlined strategic interventions, including staff training and adaptive learning tools, aimed at closing knowledge gaps and boosting student performance across all grades.
In a segment of the meeting, the board recognized district employees who have served in the military, coinciding with the Veterans Day observance. Among those acknowledged were John Procopio, Aiden Spat Fury, and Florence Spac, although not all could be present to receive their certificates. The board underscored the importance of acknowledging the contributions of colleagues who have served the country.
The meeting also featured a series of presentations that celebrated the achievements of the Vineland Athletics program during the fall season. Athletic Director Mr. Sylvester Calalo reported on the significant participation of 472 students in seven sports programs, highlighting the viral success of a video featuring senior football player Xaven Diaz. Individual and team accomplishments were acknowledged, with special mention of Coach Paul Myers, who was a finalist for the South Jersey Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. The boys’ soccer team made a noteworthy run in the NJ State Group Four playoffs, and the girls’ soccer team, led by Coach Leslie Garton, ended their season with an impressive record of 8-2.
The cross country team also received recognition for their achievements. Coach Elliot The Shields recounted the team’s growth and success, culminating in a season record of six wins and four losses. Cassidy Consulo and Man Rup Coward were celebrated for their leadership and contributions to the team’s success, including their victory at the Sal Salinum Invitational and their third consecutive County Title. These accomplishments earned the team a place in the state competition, where they ranked 13th.
Further contributions to the athletic program were acknowledged through the efforts of the field hockey, tennis, and cheerleading teams. The field hockey team, led by Coach Dawn Smith, ended their season with a strong 9-1 record, with players like Aris Dely ESO and Olivia Veri receiving league honors. The tennis team, despite Coach Vince Luciano’s absence, was praised for their deep playoff run and continued dominance in the Cumberland County tournament.
The board meeting also saw public comments addressing transportation issues. Tom Deets raised concerns about his grandson’s late arrivals to school due to bus scheduling problems, which have been ongoing despite discussions with transportation supervisors. Deets also mentioned a recent bus accident involving his grandson, seeking the district’s assistance in addressing medical bills resulting from the incident. The board attorney, Sandra Grace, addressed these concerns by stating that the district did not release any personal information about students involved in the accident and assured Deets that the district would handle the matter privately.
Additional highlights from the meeting included the naming ceremony at the VHS South Campus in honor of First Lieutenant Charles “Chick” Asela. Interim Principal Deborah Quinn expressed gratitude to the Board of Education and community members for their efforts in organizing the ceremony, recognizing the Asela family’s contributions.
The meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of the vibrant student life at Vineland High School. Michaela Juliani, the senior class president, reported on successful homecoming activities, including a parade and dance that drew significant student participation. The junior class’s victory in the float competition and the crowning of Zarya Gold as Miss Monogram were notable events, celebrating student involvement and spirit.
