Waldwick Borough Council Tackles Election Preparations, Infrastructure Projects, and Community Events
- Meeting Overview:
At its recent meeting, the Waldwick Borough Council addressed issues impacting the community, including election preparations, infrastructure improvements, and community events. The council discussed changes to local governance, ongoing projects, and future initiatives, providing residents with updates and opportunities for engagement.
One notable topics discussed was the upcoming general election. The council emphasized the importance of voter participation and highlighted key deadlines and voting options. Voters were reminded of the vote-by-mail dropbox locations, strategically placed behind the public safety building and near the library on East Prospect Street, to facilitate easy and secure voting. The council underscored the importance of the October 28 deadline for vote-by-mail applications and detailed the early voting schedule from October 25 to November 2. They encouraged residents to check the borough’s website for early voting locations, such as the Ty Senior Center in Woodcliff Lake and the Wyckoff Public Library, and advised voters to bring sample ballots for a smoother check-in process on election day.
Infrastructure and public works were also topics of discussion. The council reviewed the curbside leaf collection schedule, which was set to begin on October 23 for District 4, with subsequent dates for other districts. A calendar error was identified, advising District 1 residents not to place leaves curbside on October 30, as their first collection would occur on November 7. This correction aimed to streamline operations and ensure residents were adequately informed.
Further infrastructure improvements were addressed through resolutions, including a notable change order for cleanup and improvements to Schuler Avenue, totaling over $216,000.
The meeting also included a public hearing on Ordinance Number 2025-22, which authorized a lease agreement for the use of the old Department of Public Works complex by the Waldwick High School graduation ball committee. This annual agreement was routine, with the council assuring that the facility would be kept in good condition, emphasizing the importance of maintaining community venues for local events.
In addition to these topics, the council discussed new business and community engagement initiatives. The success of the Fire Prevention Week was highlighted, with a council member expressing gratitude for the community’s participation in events such as the Fire Prevention Night. This initiative aimed to foster a positive perception of firefighters among children, with interactive activities like a smokehouse demonstration where children practiced extinguishing fake fires.
The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce’s “Taste of Waldwick” event was also commended for its success. The council member praised the abundance of food and the positive experience shared by attendees, further highlighting the community’s vibrant social scene.
Public comments were invited, during which a resident, Ted Szo, inquired about the effectiveness of virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom or Teams. He suggested extending the trial period for these platforms and recommended email blasts to increase participation. Szo also referenced a proposed act concerning recreational sports that might benefit the community, urging the council to review it despite their usual reluctance to engage in national policy discussions.
The council meeting concluded with a motion to enter a closed session, where no decisions would be made, allowing the public the freedom to leave if desired. This session was expected to last approximately 15 minutes, maintaining transparency in council operations.
