- Meeting Overview:
Waldwick Borough Council has approved significant funding for park development and addressed various environmental and public safety issues in its recent meeting. The council’s approval of a Bergen County trust fund Municipal Grant application for Lions Club Memorial playground at Burl Park marked a major step towards enhancing local recreational facilities. Additionally, the council passed ordinances aimed at preserving open space and banning the sale of dogs and cats by retail pet stores.
The playground at Lions Club Memorial, located in Burl Park, stood at the forefront of the meeting’s agenda. The council’s discussion centered on supplementing last year’s upgrades with additional improvements, aiming to secure approximately $320,000 in combined grants towards the project’s estimated $550,000 total cost. The approved Resolution 20241-129 endorsed the submission of a grant application to the Bergen County open space trust fund for park development.
These included park clean-ups, a botche ball tournament, and the installation of a story walk at the Waldwick Public Library in Burl Park. The council also passed amendments to previous resolutions and awarded contracts for improvement projects.
The council addressed environmental concerns with the introduction and passing of two notable ordinances. Ordinance 20245 continued the municipal open space Recreation farmland and historic preservation trust fund, a program in place since 2004. Ordinance 20246, mirroring proposed state legislation, banned the sale of dogs and cats by retail pet stores in Waldwick.
Further legislative activity included the introduction of Ordinance 20247, which clarified the language concerning dumpster container permit escrow, and Ordinance 20248, which comprehensively amended regulations on the placement of dumpsters and containers on streets. These amendments reflect the council’s attention to detail in municipal governance and the maintenance of orderly public spaces.
Environmental and public safety topics dominated the council’s discussions. Concerns over the impact of excess water on the Saddle River and potential plant contamination, as well as excessive truck traffic and odors emanating from a sewer authority, prompted considerations for increased police enforcement and discussions with the authority. The council also tackled issues related to traffic congestion caused by a local car wash and suggested traffic modifications to alleviate the problem.
Community involvement in addressing local issues was exemplified by a resident’s use of petitions to bring attention to water quality in the public pool and the need for restriping a bridge.
The council also celebrated the success of the townwide garage sale and the EPS collection, highlighting the borough’s active community engagement and commitment to environmental sustainability. The environmental committee’s efforts, including addressing concerns about the public safety building and a tree ordinance, were acknowledged, along with discussions regarding flooding solutions like rain gardens.
Moreover, the council took note of a potential settlement from South Carolina and addressed recycling issues.
