- Meeting Overview:
The recent Wall School Board meeting was marked by public comments addressing the behavior of the board’s attorney, Athena Corell, the district’s handling of COVID-19 vaccinations, discrepancies in the purchasing process for trailers, and the selection of contractors for upcoming construction projects. Residents and local union representatives voiced concerns over transparency, accountability, and local worker participation in district contracts.
Ellie Razik, a member of the public, initiated the discussion with a critique of Athena Corell’s conduct during the January 2nd meeting, where Corell was accused of mocking a member of the public. Razik also urged the board to remove any references to COVID-19 vaccinations from the district website, citing global vaccine-related deaths and foreign DNA contamination concerns. Additionally, Razik questioned the effectiveness of the Rise program for students with extreme school avoidance.
The subject of Corell’s professionalism was further emphasized by Celine Duran, who expressed disappointment in the board and Corell for not addressing what Duran perceived as improper behavior towards community member Betsy Cross in a previous meeting. Duran also pointed to various instances of poor decision-making and discrepancies in district contracts.
Betsy Cross herself brought attention to inconsistencies in the minutes regarding the purchase of trailers. Cross alleged that the business administrator, Brian SMI, had not inspected the trailers and accused him of dishonesty and fraud. This accusation prompted calls for action against SMI.
The meeting also featured a strong push for project labor agreements from Mike Tranberg, Robert Shimko, and other community members. Tranberg and Shimko, the latter a business manager for the International Brotherhood Electrical Workers Local 400, advocated for these agreements to ensure that local workers are hired for construction projects. They argued that the agreements would favor neither union nor non-union companies but would guarantee the employment of local area workers.
Despite the debate, the meeting proceeded with acknowledgment of various community and student achievements. The superintendent recognized high school students for their accomplishments and thanked the staff for their efforts concerning a weather-related delayed opening. The Board President also thanked the maintenance and custodial departments for their work.
In community honors, a member of the school community was celebrated as Wall Township’s 2023 Citizen of the Year. The district also announced plans to embrace the “everything is possible” mindset, part of the seven mindsets program, and scheduled various events, including a social media safety event, junior parent night, and an elementary musicians’ concert.
On the administrative front, the curriculand instruction department announced a workshop on the I ready program for parents of students in grades K through 5, and a half-day was scheduled for professional development for these grades. Additionally, the Wall High School girls basketball players’ achievements were highlighted.
During the Board of Education report, Adam Nasr provided updates on the roofing projects, mentioning the recommendation to award the alternate with a deduct of approximately 4 million dollars over the full scope of the project. The board moved to committee reports, with the minutes of the new year’s first set of meetings posted online.
In a second public comment period, concerns were raised about the lack of disclosure of attachment for action item number 15. Questions were also posed about the vendor for the Allenwood steps and the contractor responsible for a substandard concrete pour, pointing to ongoing concerns about the district’s contracting processes.
