Warren School Board Honors 9/11 with Student Speeches and Launches Building Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The Warren School Board meeting was marked by notable student speeches commemorating September 11 and outlined significant upcoming construction projects aimed at modernizing district facilities. Additionally, the board discussed community engagement initiatives and internal committee activities, while addressing some operational concerns raised by the public.
The meeting commenced with a solemn tribute to the events of September 11, as students from the district delivered powerful speeches reflecting on the tragedy’s lasting impact. Eighth graders Disha Chadri, Hanzi Gentapali, and Farah Hibi each took to the podium to share their perspectives. Chadri opened with a reflection on a torn flag as a symbol of national grief and resilience, questioning America’s greatest threats and urging hope for the future. Gentapali followed by emphasizing the courage and unity that emerged from the tragedy, calling for a community rooted in empathy and inclusion. He invoked Eleanor Roosevelt’s words on gaining strength through experience and encouraged the audience to embody those ideals. Hibi presented four lessons from the tragedy—empathizing, listening, learning, and participating—while sharing personal family stories that underscored the human aspects of 9/11. She highlighted the heroism of first responders, notably mentioning Sergeant Sassville and Sergeant Penny’s brave actions. These narratives served as a reminder of the enduring spirit of resilience and hope.
Following the student presentations, the board transitioned to discuss key updates on the district’s construction endeavors. Significant summer projects included the renovation of middle school science rooms, unaltered for over 50 years, into a larger, modern facility. This initiative required substantial structural work, including cutting through concrete and installing new plumbing, while ensuring the protection of existing flooring. New cabinets, countertops, and rooftop HVAC units were part of this upgrade. Upcoming projects scheduled for June 2026 were also highlighted, such as a new asphalt parking lot at Woodland, sidewalk repairs, and a pedestrian crosswalk on Sterling Road. These improvements were praised for being managed by skilled district staff, reducing the need for external contractors.
The discussion further extended to maintenance plans, which involve replacing approximately 300 interior corridor doors across various schools with fire-rated doors and new hardware. A new public address system is slated for Central School, with plans to expand this upgrade to other schools by 2027. Surveillance camera enhancements are being planned in collaboration with the technology department, and playground replacements at ALT and Woodland schools are scheduled for the following summer, incorporating student input on design themes.
In addition to construction and maintenance, the board addressed community outreach and communication strategies. They proposed a goal for each board member to engage in at least one community outreach activity during the 2025-26 school year. A spreadsheet of local organizations was shared, and members were tasked with identifying connections and potential outreach opportunities by October 10. The committee on personnel negotiations and communications discussed strategies for after-hours communication, including auto-replies for messages sent outside standard hours.
Public commentary, although brief, included a notable concern from a parent, Kevin Brozby, who raised the issue of the high volume of mass emails sent to parents. He expressed that while the content was valuable, the frequency and timing were overwhelming, likening them to spam. Brozby suggested a more consolidated communication approach to prevent important messages from being overlooked. The board acknowledged his feedback, though it was not deemed an urgent matter.
As the meeting progressed, the board moved to approve items on the agenda without requests for separate votes, passing them unanimously. The session concluded with a second opportunity for public commentary, which yielded no additional remarks, and a unanimous motion to adjourn.
