- Meeting Overview:
The Warren School Board meeting addressed topics, notably the introduction of an Academic Support Program pilot designed to aid students needing additional assistance, ongoing evaluations of facility needs due to increasing enrollment, and updates on curriculum and community engagement efforts.
The Academic Support Program pilot was a focal point of the meeting. This initiative introduces three distinct levels of support tailored to meet various student needs. Level one involves scheduled intervention periods with specific teachers addressing standards across all grades. Level two features co-teaching classes with two educators collaborating for certain grades, and level three consists of an intensive pullout program specifically for sixth graders. Updates on the pilot’s progress are anticipated in February or March, as the academic year unfolds.
Facility needs were another critical discussion, prompted by the district’s rising enrollment. The finance operations and security committee, in collaboration with the district’s architect, has been assessing current buildings and exploring options for potential construction projects. They await housing data from the state, expected by the end of January, to guide their recommendations. In conjunction with this, the committee reviewed a no-tax-impact referendum set for spring, targeting capital improvements for existing facilities, which have already secured state funding approval. Other infrastructure concerns included bids for a roof replacement at the maintenance building and a proposed modest increase in preschool tuition for the 2025-26 school year, pending approval.
Curriculum updates were also presented, focusing on aligning English Language Arts and math with the latest state standards to ensure continuity across grade levels. This alignment is expected to enhance the educational experience by fostering smooth transitions from one grade to the next.
The personnel negotiations and communications committee shared their successful negotiation of a contract with the Warren Township Education Association (WTEA), a process that required several months of dedicated effort. Additionally, they reviewed job descriptions, non-tenured staff, and the superintendent’s performance. Attention is now shifting towards communication planning on community issues, such as district growth and the upcoming zero-debt referendum.
The ad hoc strategic planning committee provided an update on their preliminary activities, including stakeholder sessions held in early November. These sessions aimed to gather community input regarding the future direction of the schools. The committee reviewed feedback and began discussions on priority areas for the strategic plan, encompassing academics, operations, and facilities.
The meeting also included public commentary, where a community member expressed gratitude towards Mr. Lee, a staff member who recently resigned. The individual highlighted Mr. Lee’s positive impact on their children and noted the perceived loss for the district following his departure. The board welcomed public input, emphasizing that commentary should be relevant to the meeting agenda during the first public commentary segment, with the second open to any topic.
Recognitions and commendations were also part of the meeting’s proceedings, with the president of the board expressing gratitude for the contributions of board members and staff throughout the year. She highlighted the recent accolades awarded to various educators within the district, including ten recipients of the Governor’s Educator of the Year award and three who received the State Department of Education’s exemplary Elementary Educator award.
The board also honored Mr. Desai for his three years of service, presenting a resolution of appreciation that underscored his contributions and commitment to the community.
