Washington Town Council to Review Local Dispensary’s Request Amid Community Initiatives and Veteran Support
- Meeting Overview:
The Washington Town Council meeting addressed a series of pertinent issues, with a key focus on the proposal from a local family-run dispensary seeking approval to establish a new location in the township. The meeting also covered important community updates, including upcoming holiday events and safety advisories.
William Surwa, CEO and founder of a family-owned dispensary, presented a detailed proposal to the council, expressing the desire to expand their operations to Washington Township. Surwa outlined the company’s dedication to community involvement and their unique business model, which emphasizes partnerships with local craft growers. The dispensary’s approach sets them apart from larger, corporate competitors. Surwa provided a handout detailing their business operations and identified a property that aligns with township ordinances for their prospective site.
Surwa highlighted their commitment to community engagement, noting the dispensary’s participation in local events and initiatives. His wife, who also spoke during the public comment segment, emphasized their support for veteran groups and the discounts offered to veterans at their current location. She noted, “We have tons of veterans that come to our store. We offer them a discount,” underscoring their intent to create a welcoming environment for veterans and foster community connections. Surwa requested the council’s consideration of a resolution to permit the establishment of their dispensary, emphasizing compliance with state regulations.
During the public participation segment, Maxine Canelos, a resident of Turnersville, expressed her disappointment over the low turnout at a recent Veterans Day ceremony. Canelos suggested relocating the event permanently to the high school to avoid weather-related disruptions, as the current location’s change may have affected attendance. She remarked, “It was a beautiful affair… but I felt bad that there was nobody there,” reflecting on the ceremony’s emotional impact despite the sparse audience.
The meeting also covered various community updates. The council announced that Mr. Claus would light the Christmas tree at the upcoming ceremony, and residents were reminded of a rise in vehicle thefts, urging them to secure their vehicles and report suspicious activities. The police department has been successful in mitigating some thefts, but community vigilance remains essential.
New programs and changes to existing services were discussed, including a new yard waste pickup program beginning November 1, which requires residents to schedule pickups. Changes to trash and recycling collection were also outlined, effective June 30. Additionally, all dogs in the township must be registered and vaccinated, with registration available at the clerk’s office.
Mayor Anthony DellaPia thanked participants of the Veterans Day events and announced upcoming community events, including a Christmas light contest and tree lighting ceremony on December 5. He urged residents in need of food for Thanksgiving to contact for assistance, highlighting a police-organized food drive. Local businesses will provide meals for those spending Thanksgiving alone, with details available on the township’s website.
The mayor mentioned a walking book group event at Washington Lake Park on November 21 and a Cars and Coffee event on November 22 benefiting Toys for Tots. He encouraged community support for these initiatives. The performance of the local football team, currently undefeated and heading into playoff games, was also highlighted, with community support encouraged.
