Washington Township Advances Inclusive Playground, Faces Privacy Concerns Over License Plate Readers
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Washington Township Council meeting, developments were discussed, including progress on an all-inclusive playground, advancements in affordable housing, and privacy concerns raised about a new license plate reader system.
A notable point of discussion was the resolution pertaining to the establishment of an all-inclusive playground, a project that has been in the planning stages for several years. The Mayor expressed enthusiasm about awarding the contract soon, with construction expected to commence within 30 days. The playground is targeted to open on June 1. This initiative is part of the township’s broader efforts to enhance community facilities and provide a welcoming environment for all children and families.
Parallel to community development, the council tackled issues related to privacy and surveillance, sparked by public opposition to the Flock Group’s license plate reader system. Resident Frank Costantini voiced strong objections, characterizing the $35,000 contract as a step towards unwarranted national surveillance. Costantini argued that the system, which tracks vehicles continually, could lead to privacy invasions. His concerns were echoed by another resident, Victoria Benetti, who supported his stance and lauded the Mayor’s podcast on affordable housing for its clarity and community relevance. Benetti also praised the public works department for their efficient snow removal during the winter, highlighting the township’s operational effectiveness.
The council meeting also saw significant legislative activity, including the adoption of several ordinances aimed at establishing affordable housing districts. Ordinances 4, 5, 6, and 7, all centered around affordable housing, were adopted unanimously without public comment. Ordinance 8, addressing the Deli Drive redevelopment zone, and Ordinance 9, concerning articles related to the Fair Share Housing Act, were also adopted without public input.
Another legislative introduction was Ordinance 10, which proposes the establishment of a joint court with the Borough of Pitman. This ordinance aims to enhance judicial efficiency and is scheduled for a public hearing and adoption later in the month.
In the realm of community safety and engagement, the Mayor highlighted the Washington Township Saves Lives program, which offers free Uber rides home during events like St. Patrick’s Day to promote responsible drinking. The Mayor urged residents to use the service to ensure personal and community safety, emphasizing the township’s focus on protecting its citizens.
Additionally, the council approved a comprehensive consent agenda that included multiple resolutions. Among these, Resolution 7526 authorized a municipal clerk to advertise requests for professional services, and Resolution 7626 awarded a contract for hardscaping at Washington Lake Park. The council also approved resolutions related to accepting bonds, acknowledging a local company’s name change, and donating a surplus vehicle to the Washington Township Board of Education.
Council members provided updates on local events and initiatives, highlighting community engagement as a priority. Councilman Harris mentioned a recent craft fair and cupcake war event at the high school, while Councilwoman Pascalone outlined upcoming environmental initiatives. These include presentations and giveaways in April and a pilot program to monitor salt content in local streams. Additionally, Councilman Brown discussed road safety, emphasizing vigilance for pedestrians and cyclists, and preparations for Memorial Day.
