- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Washington Township Town Council addressed a variety of issues, most notably the promotion of a police officer and the success of a Girl Scout fundraising initiative. The council also tackled subjects ranging from budget concerns and local taxes to community events and public services. Among the decisions made were the approval of several ordinances, resolutions, and the swearing-in of a police officer to Sergeant.
This ceremonial swearing-in, conducted by Mayor Burns and Chief Gark, marked a milestone in Nicholas’s career and the police department’s development.
The Girl Scouts’ presentation detailed a highly successful second annual dessert crawl fundraiser, which generated close to $4,000. This event, supported by local businesses and residents, will fund various Girl Scout activities in Washington Township, promoting STEM education and community involvement among the youth.
The council progressed to administrative matters, approving the bill list for July 24th, 2024, along with public budget meeting minutes for June 25th, 2024, and regular meeting minutes for June 26, 2024.
Ordinances adopted after public hearings included those pertinent to capital improvements, employee salaries, stormwater control, and waste management—a reflection of the council’s broad scope of governance. Additionally, the council passed resolutions such as extending the property tax due date, canceling taxes for disabled veterans, and authorizing an online auction of Municipal property no longer needed for public use.
One particular resolution of interest was a request for South transportation to reduce tolls at exit 41 on the Atlantic City Expressway during Route 42 construction. This measure aims to mitigate traffic and enhance safety throughout the construction period.
The council’s discussion of a tax increase highlighted the balance between fiscal necessity and public opinion. The taxes had been raised by one cent since 2017, while the cost of running the town had increased by $10 million in eight years. A council member remarked on this challenge, stating that “Unfortunately, sometimes doing the right thing isn’t always the most popular,” acknowledging the difficulty in making such decisions.
In the realm of community events, the council member’s announcements covered a range of activities, including the upcoming restaurant week, library events, National Night Out, and veteran-focused initiatives. The “working in your shoes” initiative was also introduced.
During the public comments section, residents expressed concerns over various community matters: the transition to a new trash collection service, the need for park maintenance and restoration, and a dispute about the maintenance of land between residents’ homes and a neighboring business. Concerns were also raised about an ongoing legal matter related to open space off of V Harbor Road.
Additionally, a resident inquired about an online auction for vehicles, and another highlighted the need for maintenance of overgrown lawns in the area, a situation complicated by ongoing litigation concerning property ownership.
The council responded to these concerns with assurances of action and an acknowledgment of the need for further investigation into the removal of a skate park. A resident’s suggestion for tax breaks for residents who offer public services prompted the council to consider leveraging local expertise for community improvements.
The meeting concluded with a commendation for the council’s professionalism and positive changes, along with an inquiry about construction next to a storage place. The council addressed this and scheduled the next meeting before adjourning.
