The recent Washington Township Council meeting focused on community recognition and engagement, including honoring Judge Witcher for his notable contributions to law and service, celebrating local accomplishments such as an Eagle Scout project and a community event, and addressing various administrative and community-related matters.
0:08The meeting commenced with a significant tribute to Judge Witcher, who retired in August 2023 after a distinguished career. His journey began in 1996 while attending Rutgers Law and working as a teacher in the Juvenile Justice Commission. Graduating in 2001 and joining the New Jersey bar in 2002, Judge Witcher became the first African-American judge in Salem County in 2010. Over his career, he served as an assistant prosecutor and earned certification as a criminal trial attorney. The Mayor presented a proclamation for Black History Month, acknowledging his service and contributions. Judge Witcher expressed his gratitude, highlighting the sacrifices made by many and the importance of community and faith in his journey.
The council recognized Zach, a local Eagle Scout, for his project with Troop 123, which involved constructing a trailhead and owl boxes at Elderman Fossil Park. This project required 283 man-hours and demonstrated Zach’s dedication, having earned 39 merit badges and participating in community service activities such as the township’s Rabies Clinic. The Mayor praised Zach’s commitment and spoke on the skills and values developed through the Scouting experience.
Lou Pino was also recognized for his contributions to the “Night to Shine” event, where he provided tuxedos for attendees. The council highlighted Pino’s generosity and the event’s success, describing it as a “Super Bowl” experience for participants. Pino emphasized the initiative’s goal of raising awareness and encouraging more business participation.
The council addressed several administrative matters, including the approval of the February 12 bill list and the January 22 meeting minutes. A notable ordinance, 00125, concerning zoning district amendments, was introduced and received unanimous support. Resolutions numbered 57 through 73 were approved, covering topics such as occupancy guarantees, landscape buffer performance, and motor vehicle enforcement. Additionally, tax-related resolutions were discussed, including the cancellation of taxes for a totally disabled veteran and refunds for tax overpayments.
15:59Council members reflected on the recent “Night to Shine” event, a prom for individuals with developmental disabilities, which saw attendance grow from 80 to 250. Efforts to secure a larger venue for future events were discussed. The council also congratulated new appointees to the Washington Township Municipal Utilities Authority, acknowledging their service and contributions.
In old business, the 17th Annual Classic Car Show was announced, organized by the Historical Preservation Commission to raise funds for the Old Stone House and village. The event is expected to feature 175 to 200 classic cars.
A council member shared a personal experience attending a Holocaust survivor’s presentation at the library, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation. The presentation was described as moving, with a call to educate others to prevent the repetition of historical atrocities.
The meeting included lighter moments, such as a school pep rally where Officer Jeff Doo received a pie in the face, fostering community spirit and engagement.
