- Meeting Overview:
The Watchung Hills School Board meeting saw developments, with the approval of a $46,000 change order for ongoing construction projects and a variety of updates on school facilities, policies, and upcoming events.
The most notable action during the meeting was the approval of a $46,000 change order related to the school’s construction projects. This change order addressed previously unidentified issues that had arisen during the construction process. Tim provided a detailed explanation of the components involved in the change order, while Bill raised inquiries about the potential for further changes. Tim responded. This change order is essential to ensure that the construction continues smoothly and meets the school’s standards and requirements.
In addition to the change order, Tim gave an update on the various construction projects underway. The nurse’s office has been completed, and the nurses have moved in. Fiber optic cable replacement throughout the building is also finished, greatly enhancing the school’s connectivity infrastructure. Significant improvements have been made to the gym’s locker room and athletic training areas, expected to be ready by early to mid-September. Tim expressed optimism about these upgrades, emphasizing their benefits for student athletes.
The ceramics studio and photography lab are projected to be completed in early September, although some electrical work remains. The track’s asphalt has been laid, with preparations for pouring the running surface currently underway. The steam lab project is the most complex and is expected to be completed by the end of October due to its intensive requirements.
Tim also discussed the upgrades to the Performing Arts Center (PAC), including new carpeting and LED lighting to improve visibility and safety. He noted the efficiency of the new lighting compared to older fixtures, which tend to generate heat. Plans for a chiller replacement are scheduled for October or November. Tim expressed cautious optimism about the progress and believed that the enhancements would be appreciated by students, staff, and parents.
Superintendent Elizabeth C. Jewett provided updates on the school’s activities as summer drew to a close. Fall sports practices have commenced, and the marching band is active on the field. Dr. Jewett noted that construction projects at the school were nearing completion. She highlighted that the first day of new teacher orientation had taken place, coordinated by Miss Carol and Miss Denson. Teachers are set to return on Monday, with students starting the following Thursday.
In a heartwarming initiative, a graduating senior, Juliet Changen, collaborated with Tina Osmond, the Project Graduation lead, to reach out to families of seniors with remaining balances in their lunch accounts. They suggested donating these amounts to the Somerset County Food Bank instead of receiving refunds. As a result, a total of $536.38 was donated to the food bank, and a thank-you letter was received from them. Dr. Jewett mentioned that a thank-you letter would also be sent to the families who contributed, highlighting the positive outcome of this effort.
The operations committee met on August 15th to review the change order for the construction project, which was then voted on during the meeting. Chris provided a detailed explanation of the components involved, while Bill raised inquiries regarding the potential for further changes. Tim responded.
The health office project is in the final planning stages, with plans to relocate it to a newly renovated space. The current health office will be converted into an occupational therapy area. Tim emphasized that multiple conversations are still necessary before final decisions regarding the project’s elements can be made. The track replacement project is also on schedule, with paving expected to be completed by September 2nd, contingent on weather conditions.
During public comments, no comments were made, but the board did discuss scheduling a board retreat in September to set objectives for the upcoming school year. A tentative date of September 12th was proposed and seemed to gain consensus among the members.
The board took a moment to acknowledge the passing of Barry Hunsinger, a longtime representative from Watchung and a significant supporter of the school and community. Condolences were expressed for his family, and members reflected on his dedication and passion for the school and its athletic programs.
Several items were voted on and passed unanimously, including a walk-in item affirming the finding of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) in a specific case. This item ensured that the family involved would receive a written decision along with information about the right to appeal.
Further discussions included the emergence of a national movement regarding cell phone policies in schools. The board contemplated the implications of possibly removing cell phones from classrooms and suggested assigning this topic to the education committee for further examination. This topic will likely be included in the agenda for the upcoming retreat for a more in-depth exploration.
