- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Watchung Hills School Board, the board recognized outstanding educators, discussed ongoing issues with school traffic patterns, and debated concerns about state control over local education governance. The meeting also highlighted various student achievements and upcoming school events.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to honoring exceptional staff members. Mr. Joseph Asales was celebrated as the Educator of the Year for 2024-2025, with praises directed at his ability to cultivate a positive and supportive classroom environment. His teaching extends beyond academics, instilling values of teamwork, perseverance, discipline, and resilience in his students. Observers noted the warm atmosphere surrounding his classroom, where students engage with him in an affirming manner.
Mr. Kevin Rice was recognized as the Education Services Professional of the Year, credited for his important role in supporting the school community’s most vulnerable students. The accolades for these educators underscored their vital contributions to the academic and emotional well-being of students.
In the board’s discussions, a significant topic was the ongoing debate about school traffic patterns. Concerns were raised about the current setup in front of the school, emphasizing safety issues for both students and parents. One board member criticized the existing traffic patterns, stating, “the traffic patterns are still not fixed,” and warned that the situation could worsen with anticipated heavy rain. They stressed the need for further improvements, although another member countered that changes to bus lane usage had improved the situation.
The board also addressed concerns about legislative actions perceived as encroachments on local governance of education. One member expressed unease about increasing state control over education. They called for public vigilance and communication with representatives to ensure local control remains intact. Another board member echoed these concerns, citing examples from other states where education is managed at a county or state level, potentially leading to a “one size fits all” approach that could overlook local educational needs.
The meeting also included updates from the Education Committee, which discussed college trends and the need for professional development for counseling staff. A policy revision regarding electronic communications and recording devices was revisited, with ongoing federal and state guidance on cell phone policies considered for future discussions. The introduction of “Warrior Watch,” an initiative inspired by visits to other high schools and CBS news segments, aims to develop students’ public speaking, writing, interviewing, and film editing skills.
The Personnel Committee reported on the upcoming increase in New Jersey’s minimum wage, affecting substitute secretaries’ hourly rates. Spring coaching positions are set to be approved in January as the season begins on March 10th.
Student representatives shared notable achievements among their peers, including Ian Kabaria’s receipt of the Somerset County Amanda Hydra Award for leadership and community service, Grace Elen’s selection to represent Watchung Hills at the HOBY New Jersey Leadership Seminar, and Sonia Shareif’s nomination for the prestigious Jefferson Scholarship.
The recent fall production, “Hope and Heartache Diner,” was lauded for its success, attributed to the dedication of student actors and the Culinary Club. The English Department announced the launch of a new Writing Center, which has logged over 400 student visits since its inception.
Upcoming holiday concerts, including an instrumental concert and a choral concert, are scheduled for December 17th, with a special performance by eighth-grade students on December 20th. The committee is considering inviting local officials and businesses to these events to enhance community engagement.
