- Meeting Overview:
The recent Watchung Hills School Board meeting focused on infrastructure improvements, student successes, and ongoing challenges with standardized testing. Key topics included the completion of various school projects, transportation updates, and remarkable student achievements, alongside frustrations with state testing requirements.
The meeting began with a warm welcome to returning students Juliana and Sophie, who reported positively on the start of the academic year. The board expressed satisfaction with the energetic atmosphere among staff and students, noting that the school year had already been in full swing, including the commencement of sports seasons. These updates set a positive tone for subsequent discussions.
One of the most notable updates was the completion of several infrastructure projects over the summer, highlighted during a recent board retreat. These projects included a new track, which had already been utilized for a recent game, and improvements to classrooms, a new nurses’ station, and upgraded locker rooms. The board emphasized transparency, committing to post details of these projects for public viewing. The administration’s oversight of these projects received commendation.
Transportation issues from previous years were also addressed. The board reported a smoother start to the school year, attributing this improvement to the effective management by a new transportation coordinator who began her role in mid-August. Despite past challenges due to driver shortages and rising costs, the current state of transportation services appeared to be under control, alleviating some of the stresses that had previously been prevalent.
Student achievements were another focal point. Five students were named semi-finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship competition, continuing a trend of success with a total of 38 semi-finalists over the past five years. Specific students, such as Leo Chen and Melody Chen, were highlighted for their notable accomplishments in a remote internship focused on protein aggregation and passing the National Registry EMT exam, respectively.
The meeting also covered various school events, including a successful ninth-grade orientation and a two-week band camp that concluded with preparation for the marching band’s upcoming performance. The athletic department reported a full schedule of activities, noting the opening of the new track and the anticipation surrounding the homecoming football game.
In terms of academic performance, the board introduced a segment focused on the district’s assessment report. Discussions on the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) and comparisons of student performance over the years were presented. The recent transition to digital testing for the PSAT, despite having a “rocky” implementation, ultimately resulted in strong student performance. SAT scores from previous years showed consistency, with the district maintaining scores above 1200, though there was a noted decline in state averages.
The discussion extended to ACT scores, which did not reflect a decline similar to that observed in SAT scores, prompting further analysis of the implications for future years. In particular, the senior class consistently performed well on standardized tests, positioning themselves favorably for their future academic or professional endeavors. The focus on advanced placement (AP) activities revealed an increase in the number of students taking AP tests and their scores, particularly over the last three years.
Attention was also given to state assessments, including the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJ GPA) for 11th graders and the NJSLA assessments for mathematics and English language arts (ELA). Improvements in the geometry state test and ELA results for 9th graders were noted, with substantial gains in the number of students exceeding expectations.
However, significant frustrations were expressed regarding the current testing requirements imposed by the Department of Education. Concerns were raised about the proficiency numbers in relation to the adjusted cut scores for assessments. One speaker described the unequal treatment in changing these scores as “unconscionable,” emphasizing the need for accurate data analysis. There was an acknowledgment of the importance of breaking down the data accurately for comparative analysis.
The state science test, which assesses students based on three years of science standards, was also discussed. The timing of the test and the lack of promised new practice tests and digital resources from the state were highlighted as issues affecting student preparation. Despite these challenges, students performed better than the state average, with a notable increase in the percentage of students achieving advanced proficiency.
The board recognized the ongoing efforts of teachers and the significance of consistent curriculum implementation in improving student outcomes. The presentation of subgroup data, mandated by the state, posed additional challenges due to privacy concerns and the variability of test takers. The increasing participation in AP tests was viewed positively, validating previous decisions to make AP courses more accessible.
A significant policy change was announced, allowing senior citizens to attend sporting events for free in response to concerns about online ticketing accessibility. This decision was welcomed by the board, with a humorous note on the lack of strict identification checks.
