- Meeting Overview:
The Watchung Hills School Board meeting covered topics including new curriculum initiatives, teacher compensation adjustments, ongoing construction projects, and a detailed report on student safety data.
The education committee’s recent meeting on August 29 focused heavily on new and revised curriculum initiatives. Courses slated for approval at the upcoming board meeting on September 17 were discussed, with an emphasis on the importance of early preparation for courses that will not be implemented until the 2025-2026 school year. New counseling courses designed for 9th and 10th graders, aimed at college preparation and career readiness, were highlighted. The committee also explored the potential for additional “lunch and learn” sessions to accommodate faculty interested in more training, with professional development sessions covering topics such as artificial intelligence, student engagement, and overall wellness.
Another point of discussion was the negotiations committee’s efforts to enhance stipends for teachers involved in extracurricular activities. The board acknowledged the need for equitable compensation to reflect the work of these teachers, comparing it to other districts to ensure competitive standards. The committee emphasized the importance of recognizing the time and effort teachers invest, even though achieving full compensation might not be feasible. There was anticipation for swift approval of the new stipend schedule, with the possibility of reopening negotiations if it was not accepted.
The board also reviewed the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) report, which covered incidents from January 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024. The report included data on Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) investigations, with four cases deemed unconfirmed and six confirmed.
Construction projects within the district were also noted, with completion expected within the next month or two. This update assures the community that ongoing improvements are on track, contributing to a better learning environment for students.
A notable part of the meeting involved a member of the public, identified as Rxan Nin, a junior at Watchung Hills, who introduced a proposal for a new club called Alam Mode, aimed at creating a fashion magazine. Nin, alongside her co-founder Sarah LaVine, expressed their enthusiasm for the club, emphasizing its potential to unify the community and enhance school spirit. Nin stated, “we really foresee this unifying the community at Watchung Hills and I know all my peers are looking forward to this.” While the board acknowledged her comments, it was clarified that the proposal was not on the agenda for the evening’s meeting. A board member commended Nin and LaVine for their initiative in starting a unique club within the school’s offerings.
Additionally, the board discussed recent guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education concerning cell phone policies. The committee also reviewed attendance follow-up regarding the impact of a past fail policy for excessive absences, noting improvements in student attendance after warnings of potential credit loss. The use of home instruction for students absent due to illness was also addressed.
The meeting also included discussions on upcoming presentations, such as a district assessment report at the next meeting, New Jersey school climate and culture survey results on October 1, and a strategic planning update on October 15. Future topics of interest like cell phone policies, STEAM initiatives, and potential curriculum enhancements were also noted.
In the latter part of the meeting, a board member brought up an article from the Star Ledger about a regionalization study, questioning the funding source from the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) rather than the Department of Education. The explanation provided clarified that the legislation designated DCA for this purpose due to its experience with shared services among municipalities, while the Department of Education does not oversee these programs. The next meeting of the shared services regionalization committee was scheduled for September 30, with discussions anticipated around progress made over the summer and community engagement strategies moving forward.
