Watchung School Board Grapples with Construction Challenges and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Watchung School Board meeting on May 22, 2025, addressed multiple issues, with discussions centered around challenges in construction projects, recognition of student achievements, and policy updates. The board discussed difficulties with the outdoor learning commons project, celebrated various student accomplishments, and addressed changes in prescription drug coverage, among other topics.
The most topic discussed at the meeting was the update on the referendum projects, particularly the outdoor learning commons and multi-purpose field, provided by Connor O’Brien from Legacy Construction Management. O’Brien reported that the HVAC chillers were operational, but a pump required replacement, which was planned for after school hours to minimize disruptions. However, the outdoor learning commons project faced significant challenges. Although bids had been opened, only a single bid was received, which exceeded the budget. O’Brien explained that the initial interest from three contractors dwindled due to concerns with the adequacy of project drawings. This resulted in a need to reassess the approach and look into a cooperative purchasing platform to solicit more bids. O’Brien emphasized the necessity of aligning construction schedules with the school calendar, suggesting that more disruptive work, like concrete and demolition, should occur before the new school year begins.
In addition to construction updates, the meeting celebrated student achievements. The junior solar sprint team secured first place in engineering at a recent competition. Team members Ariana Patel, Prrenav Argawal, Rohan Patel, and Alec Choweki were recognized for their accomplishment. Moreover, the board praised various school events, including an art show and glee club performances, highlighting the dedication of students and staff. The board also acknowledged the completion of the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) for grades three through eight, with makeup sessions scheduled.
The board addressed administrative matters, notably a proposed change in prescription drug coverage due to rising costs. The healthcare broker evaluated options, recommending a new plan under Benard, which was described as equal to or better than current coverage. If approved, an informational meeting for staff would be organized before the school year ends.
Another point of discussion was the board’s compliance with state special education monitoring requirements, which would place the district in a closed status for six years. Plans for an autism program set to begin in September 2025 were shared, with individual parent tours announced. The meeting also touched on summer program staffing needs, particularly for speech and occupational therapists, and the pre-K tuition rate discussion. Moreover, the finance committee reported on the potential for legal actions against social media companies over youth safety concerns, and emphasized the need for a change in prescription coverage.
Policy revisions were also a focal point, with updates on transportation and student supervision. A new waiver form for child pickup requiring photo ID was introduced. The board also discussed a legislative update regarding a bill designating May as water safety month in New Jersey.
In board business, the outcome of a petition by former board member Anthony Gracia was shared. The board was found compliant in its process to fill a vacancy, though the financial implications were noted, with approximately $42,000 spent on legal fees due to the petition. The current board was commended for maintaining collaborative and respectful operations.
