Wayne School Board Applauds Student Achievements and Honors Retiring Staff
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Wayne School Board meeting prominently featured the recognition of student achievements, particularly in music and performing arts, and the acknowledgment of retiring staff members who have made impactful contributions to the district.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to applauding the accomplishments of students in the district’s music programs. Abby, a sixth grader, won first place in an international music competition and performed at Carnegie Hall, while Luke Siker and Kaido Wterman were celebrated for their participation in the NJSMA sixth grade honors band. Students from various schools were recognized for their achievements in instrumental and vocal music, participating in regional honor bands and choirs. Teachers emphasized the collaborative efforts of educators across the district and the vital role of community support in fostering student success. The Wayne Valley Marching Band was highlighted for winning the Class A State Championship for the third consecutive year.
In addition to student achievements, the meeting honored several retiring staff members. Roberto Ryell, who dedicated over 30 years to education at various schools within the district, was acknowledged for her work in the connections program, which provided a supportive environment for students who struggled in traditional settings. Similarly, Kelly Torn was recognized for her dedicated career at Ryerson, Lafayette, and Tunasty Elementary Schools, expressing pride in her students’ progress and her teaching experiences.
Brian Hinderwong, known for his reliability and mentorship in the buildings and grounds department, was celebrated for his career, which began as a night custodian and culminated in his role as a groundskeeper. Michael Rose, a teacher of anatomy and physiology at Wayne Valley High School, was commended for his practical insights, calm demeanor, and efforts to promote healthy living among students. The board expressed deep appreciation for these individuals.
The meeting also touched on other notable items. Dr. DeFina was set to receive the Dick Ensburg Teacher Appreciation Award for 2026, with a ceremony planned for May. In sports, the first Ray Riker Invitational honored the long-serving coach at Wayne Hills with a pentathlon event. Artistic achievements were highlighted by students’ participation in the NJWS side-by-side concert, performing alongside the New Jersey Wind Symphony.
The project included a chocolate fundraiser and the creation of encouragement cards, raising approximately $750 for disadvantaged families.
In terms of facility updates, the board discussed ongoing projects such as the completion of the hot water replacement at Wayne Hills High School. An environmental issue at Skyler Kofax Middle School required air quality testing, which showed better conditions than outdoor levels. Two motor incidents at Wayne Valley High School led to smoke in the hallway and kitchen, addressed by PSEG. Transportation matters included a discussion on the disposal of obsolete buses and bus evacuation drills. A resident’s proposal for a bus seat lottery aimed at improving safety for students walking long distances was also considered.
