Wayne School Board Discusses Transportation Challenges and Celebrates Student and Staff Contributions
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Wayne School Board meeting, transportation challenges were a focal point, with discussions about new vehicle arrivals and ongoing supply chain issues. The board also took time to celebrate contributions from both retiring staff and student representatives, while acknowledging the achievements of various school programs.
One of the primary concerns addressed during the meeting was the current state of the school district’s transportation resources. The district awaits the arrival of two small vans ordered last year, yet faces delays in the delivery of 24 larger buses due to supply chain disruptions. Discussions highlighted the cost of these long buses, estimated between $185,000 and $200,000 each, as the board weighs options between propane and diesel fuel types. The board also set a deadline of June 17th to finalize summer bus routes, including those critical for special education students.
In addition to logistical challenges, the board recognized the contributions of student representatives, Zach and Caitlyn, who were stepping down from their roles. Both received awards and shared their future plans, with Zach heading to Bucknell University and Caitlyn to the University of Illinois. They reflected on their experiences, with Zach expressing gratitude for the opportunity to understand the educational system’s inner workings and Caitlyn hoping to advocate for student support in her future endeavors.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of various school programs. The superintendent reported on a successful automotive show featuring students from both Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills, emphasizing the importance of vocational opportunities. Additionally, Wayne Valley’s Relay for Life event raised over $30,000 for cancer research.
Recognition extended to retiring staff members, with tributes to individuals like Linda Kisler, Kathy Tarico, Kim Mattisuch, Karen Messerola, Anna Maria, and Sue Kaplan. Their decades of service and commitment to nurturing and educating students were acknowledged, with personal anecdotes illustrating the impact they had on the community. The board expressed deep gratitude for their contributions and wished them well in their future endeavors.
In other developments, the Wayne Hills HOSA chapter’s challenges were brought to light by a newly elected co-president. Despite securing funding for an adviser, the chapter remained inactive due to difficulties in finding one. A proposal was made to create a joint HOSA chapter between Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley High Schools. Board members expressed support for this proposal, recognizing the need for collaboration to enhance student development.
The meeting wrapped up with board member comments. Members reflected on the sacrifices made by service members and encouraged the community to honor these individuals during the holiday. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the importance of supporting student initiatives like HOSA and a commitment to finding solutions through collaboration with the administration and teachers’ union.
