Wayne School Board Highlights Chronic Absenteeism Improvement and Launches New Advisory Committee
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Wayne School Board meeting, attention was focused on the district’s progress in reducing chronic absenteeism and the introduction of a new advisory committee aimed at future-proofing the schools. The board also recognized National Assistant Principal Week and celebrated the contributions of para-professionals and initiatives supporting autism awareness.
Chronic absenteeism was a primary focus, with a presentation revealing significant improvements. Last year, five schools exceeded the 10% chronic absenteeism rate, while this year only three schools remain above that threshold. Ryerson, Skyler, and GW schools reported absenteeism rates of 10.4%, 12.1%, and 16%, respectively. The schools have developed individualized corrective action plans that include family surveys, targeted after-school activities, and incentive programs to improve attendance. This represents a nearly 10% reduction in absenteeism compared to the previous year.
The board announced the formation of the Future Ready Schools Advisory Committee. This body will serve in an advisory capacity, examining school buildings, enrollment trends, and the impact of residential growth on the district. The committee aims to ensure community members have a voice in shaping the future of Wayne schools, although it will not have decision-making authority. A demographic study, expected to be released in early May, will inform the committee’s work.
The meeting also included acknowledgments of various national observances. National Assistant Principal Week highlighted the critical role of assistant principals in supporting students and families. Para-professionals were celebrated for their dedication to classroom support, with April 1st recognized as Para-Professional Day. The board also noted World Autism Month, urging increased understanding and acceptance of autism.
Additional discussions at the meeting covered updates on the middle school track criteria and appeal process, new curriculum resources, and changes to the summer school program. The Wayne Education Foundation’s partnership to hold Safety Town for incoming kindergarten students was also noted, providing a foundational introduction to school safety.
