Wayne School Board Honors Achievements in Music and Education

The Wayne School Board meeting on May 16th, 2024, centered around the recognition of various achievements by students and staff in music and education. The Wayne Valley Jazz Ensemble received a gold rating at the West Milford jazz festival, and senior Roberto Ceros was named one of the three best soloists. A focal point of the meeting was the recognition of the school district’s music students. Mr. Paterno acknowledged the achievements of music students from Anthony Wayne Middle School and George Washington Middle School. The students were commended for their performances and participation in ensembles. The chorus teacher and students who had achieved success in various music competitions were also recognized. The sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and the Jazz Ensemble all received first place with the highest ratings at competitions. Notably, the GW Eagles received two overall ensemble awards, and Ava Scavone, a sixth-grade student, received special recognition for best overall Elementary School vocal soloist. The Skyler Kovax Awards were presented to several students for their achievements in musical areas, and Wayne Valley High School band members were introduced for their success in different music programs and competitions. The Unified Champion School program was highlighted for promoting social inclusion, and certificates were presented to over 500 participating students.
In addition to the music awards, the board paid tribute to several retiring staff members for their service, including Kathy Arts, Janet Johnson, Asunta Stigliano, Christina Lechner, Paul Gavin Bennett, Brian McNutt, Diane Epino, Julia Kelly, and David Drak. The outgoing athletic director, Dave, was given a farewell, with the board expressing gratitude for his leadership and dedication to the school’s athletic programs.
The meeting also included discussions led by various committees. The Transportation and Facilities Committee talked about the use of facilities, potential grants, security assessments, and construction projects. They also addressed the challenges posed by solar panels on the roof affecting construction bids. The Transportation Department reported successful bus inspections and evacuation drills. The Personnel Committee reviewed job descriptions, while the Finance Committee covered financial reports, contracts, budget updates, and potential reductions for savings. The Communications Committee discussed technology issues and ways to celebrate teachers. Public comments raised concerns about the failed bond referendum, with suggestions for a new referendum and a citizen volunteering to participate in a committee to address the issue. The board concluded the meeting by entering an executive session to discuss a legal matter.
