Wayne School Board Rejects Custodial Union’s Unfair Practice Charge
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Wayne School Board meeting, the approval of a settlement between the board and the Wayne Custodial Maintenance Association marked a key resolution to an unfair practice charge. The agreement was presented as an action item and approved based on the superintendent’s recommendation, although the specific terms of the settlement were not disclosed during the meeting. This development was one of several topics addressed, alongside student achievements, staff retirements, policy discussions, and a presentation on board member responsibilities.
The settlement with the Wayne Custodial Maintenance Association followed a discussion and affirmation of the superintendent’s decision on a separate, unspecified case, as required by New Jersey statute.
The meeting opened up for public comments on agenda items, where citizens were encouraged to share their thoughts while adhering to a three-minute time limit. Following public input, the Facilities and Transportation Subcommittee reported on several infrastructure projects, including generator paving, electrical upgrades, and the replacement of building components such as roofs and windows. They also discussed the review of fees for facilities used by non-board entities and transportation agreements, emphasizing the need for a dispatcher and mechanic.
Additionally, the Personnel Committee discussed the non-renewal of certified staff contracts and changes to single unit contracts. The committee’s report coincided with the announcement of retirements for four long-serving members of the district: Gail Conway, Abraham Moore, Eda Fante, and Robert Yost. Each retiree was celebrated with personal anecdotes and commendations for their years of service and contributions to the Wayne Township Public Schools.
Further recognitions of service included three more retirees. The head custodian at A.P. Terhune Elementary, Victor Negron, was lauded for his 38 years of service. Bon Matty’s extensive career and contributions, including the creation of a therapy dog program and academic publications, were celebrated. Mill Sanu, a paraprofessional for 25 years, was commended for her compassion and excellence in working with students. Additionally, Tamara Conforth, a special education teacher, was acknowledged for her service with gratitude expressed for her contributions to the district.
In terms of student and staff achievements, the board recognized the outstanding performance of Wayne Valley student swimmer Sarah Rodriguez. The Wayne Hills symphonic band received a gold rating at a regional concert band festival, and Wayne Hills photo students received 91 awards in the Scholastic Arts and Writing competition. The meeting also highlighted the participation of student leaders in a women’s future leadership forum and a cross-cultural poetry session facilitated by English educator Keith Perkins with students from Ukraine.
The winter sports season was another focal point, with the board acknowledging the achievements of student-athletes and coaches in basketball, wrestling, and various other sports. The contributions of the Anthony Wayne Middle School PTO, AP Terhune Elementary School PTO, and Ryerson Elementary School PTO were recognized, with donations totaling $3,740 to support field trips and school activities.
A presentation from Miss Kelly Mitchell, a representative from the New Jersey School Boards Association, provided insight into the roles and responsibilities of board members. Emphasizing oversight, policymaking, and the relationship between the board and the superintendent, Mitchell discussed the importance of effective communication, adherence to the code of ethics, and the board’s role in advancing student achievement. The potential pitfalls of ethical violations and proper communication channels, especially regarding social media, were also covered. The board expressed interest in further training and a self-evaluation session with Mitchell.
Finally, the meeting closed with plans to reform the citizens committee following the bond referendum, which failed to pass with 3,329 yes votes against 5,341 no votes.
