- Meeting Overview:
The Wayne School Board held its regular meeting on September 26, 2024, with discussions on the appointment of a new Assistant Superintendent, updates on the aftercare program, and recent policy changes regarding graduation conduct.
The most significant topic of the evening was the appointment of Dr. Lauren Kasmar as the new Assistant Superintendent, replacing the retiring Donna Richman. Dr. Kasmar, who currently serves as the Director of Curriculum and Grants for the Hackensack School District, was selected after a rigorous interview process. Superintendent Mark Toback praised her extensive experience, noting that she started her career as a special education teacher and has served in her current role for nine years. Pending board vetting and employment contract approval, Dr. Kasmar will begin transitioning into her new role.
Another notable issue addressed was the improvement in the aftercare program. Previously, a resident had expressed concerns about the program’s enrollment limits, which had left 50 students on a waiting list. Superintendent Toback reported that the issue had been resolved, with no students currently on the waiting list.
The board also approved a settlement agreement in a civil action case, authorizing the board president and secretary to execute the necessary documents. The specifics of the settlement were not discussed in detail but were approved as part of the meeting agenda.
In terms of facilities and transportation, updates were provided regarding the smooth opening of schools and ongoing projects. The electrical upgrade for the day center is near completion, and issues with the sewage system at Lafayette were resolved just before the school year began. Other updates included the completion of the James Frances restroom and the pending start of the Wayne Hills High School chimneys project.
Additionally, the board discussed recent policy changes concerning student conduct during graduation ceremonies. This follows incidents where students displayed Palestinian flags during the June graduation ceremony. A revised policy now states that diplomas will be mailed to students who meet all requirements and adhere to the district’s code of conduct throughout the graduation ceremony. The policy aims to give the administration time to review any incidents and determine appropriate actions.
