Wayzata School Board Meeting Highlights Growth in Special Education and Student Support Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Wayzata School Board meeting prominently featured discussions on the district’s expanding special education services and the increasing population of English language learners. The board stressed the importance of innovative programming and support strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the substantial growth in the special education department and the district’s strategic response to these changes. The number of students identified with educational disabilities has nearly doubled over the past decade, particularly since the pandemic. The most prevalent disabilities addressed include speech-language impairments, autism spectrum disorders, and specialized learning disabilities, making up about 60% of the students in special education. This growth has prompted the district to explore new avenues for support, such as the introduction of American Sign Language (ASL) classes at West Middle School, which have seen high enrollment and active student participation.
The board also highlighted the success of the unified program, which has expanded over the past decade. Special Education Supervisor Amy Van Dunk shared stories of students participating in various unified activities, such as track and field events and theatrical performances, fostering camaraderie and inclusivity. The program has been particularly effective in building social skills and friendships among students with diverse abilities. Student Ben Weekley, a board member of the Unifi club, shared his positive experiences with these classes.
In addition to special education, the meeting addressed the growth in the English language learner (ELL) population, which increased by 81 students over the past three years, bringing the total to 713 by spring 2025. The multilingual team has been instrumental in supporting these students, achieving an 83% success rate for high-risk students in co-taught English language arts classes. This team plays a role in ensuring the full inclusion of ELL students in school life, preparing them for future success.
Mental health services were another focal point, with an emphasis on strengthening partnerships with families and community providers. The district has expanded its social, emotional, and mental health supports by adding school counselors and deans. Collaborations with organizations like the Relate Counseling Center and Growing Through Grief provide essential support for students facing mental health challenges.
The board also discussed the health services team’s role as the first point of contact for students and families, noting over 80,000 visits in the past year. Section 504 plans under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 support approximately 440 students.
The meeting included testimonials from families about the district’s inclusion efforts. Ryan Wy shared his family’s experience with the support provided to his son Everett, who has arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. The support from the school staff, including the use of an AAC device and a power chair, has been transformative for Everett’s communication and mobility. The Wy family expressed gratitude for the district’s dedication to their son’s development and community inclusion.
In addition to these discussions, the board recognized several staff members for their contributions. Superintendent Chace B. Anderson acknowledged Steph Weekly and Anna Heatland as employees of the month for their dedication and impact on students and colleagues. The board also celebrated the impending retirements of Kristen Baldwin and Michelle How, both long-serving teachers in the district.
