- Meeting Overview:
The Wayzata School Board meeting on September 9, 2024, addressed issues, including teacher retention and class sizes, while also celebrating staff achievements and discussing new initiatives to support the district’s growing student population.
One notable topics discussed was the challenge of managing increasing class sizes due to rising enrollment. A board member highlighted the district’s consistent teacher resignations and retirements, which necessitated the hiring of new teachers. This development was generally welcomed, as smaller class sizes have been associated with a positive start to the school year, particularly in elementary schools. However, concerns were raised by parents during the audience opportunity section. Karen, a parent with three children in the district, expressed her frustration over the decision not to add additional sections for third and fourth grades, resulting in class sizes reaching 30 and 32 students. She explained that this led her to transfer her younger children to a different school where class sizes were below 25, criticizing the district’s communication and transparency regarding class size decisions.
Following Karen, Sarah Jane Nichols reinforced the call for increased visibility of board members in school buildings. She argued that firsthand observations are essential for board members to understand the classroom environment and make informed decisions regarding curriculum and resource allocation. Nichols emphasized the need for board members to witness the day-to-day dynamics in classrooms, including the new block schedule at the middle school and elementary school class sizes.
The meeting also recognized the contributions of several staff members. Heather Baker, a special education case manager and teacher, was honored as the Employee of the Month for her dedication to meeting students’ needs and creating a positive learning environment. Additionally, Austin Tolerson and Abby BR were acknowledged for their roles in the successful implementation of a new schedule at the middle schools. Their extensive commitment, including working late hours and collaborating with various staff members, was praised as vital to ensuring a smooth transition for students.
The board also took time to honor retiring employees, including Julianne Ganon from Oakwood Elementary, who was recognized for her seven years of service in the district. A video presentation during School Board Appreciation Month highlighted the importance of school boards in advocating for local communities, with one speaker emphasizing the transformative role of school boards and encouraging community engagement.
In terms of new initiatives, Pon Mel, the student council vice president from Wayzata High School, provided an update on the school’s activities. Pon reported the introduction of an online learning day for freshmen to ease their transition, which was well-received. Preparations for homecoming week with a “Mamma Mia” theme were underway, with changes aimed at enhancing school spirit and the overall student experience. Pon also introduced a new event called the “Duckathon,” designed to encourage students to explore their environment by finding hidden rubber ducks around the school.
The meeting included a district Spotlight presentation led by the Executive Director of Human Resources, who summarized the positive developments and successes at the start of the school year. The district reported a total enrollment of 12,792 students, with the ninth-grade class being the largest in the history of Wayzata Public Schools. The district also hired 132 new K-12 teachers over the summer, with a goal to attract energetic and capable educators. Additional staffing changes included new positions such as custodians, administrative professionals, and associate principals, particularly highlighting the introduction of an elementary associate principal role at Sunset Hill Elementary.
In the administrative reports segment, Stacy, the Executive Director of Human Resources, presented a contract for the Wetta Cafés bargaining unit. The three-year contract included pay increases in response to new free lunch legislation, which had led to an increase in lunches served. The contract was approved unanimously by the board, with members complimenting the respectful negotiation process and inclusion of taxpayer cost information.
