Wayzata School Board Prioritizes Transparent, Inclusive Superintendent Search Process
- Meeting Overview:
The Wayzata School Board held a special meeting on February 4, 2026, to focus on the search for a new superintendent. Discussion centered on survey results from students and community members, the development of a leadership profile, and the procedural elements of the superintendent hiring process.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the presentation of a public engagement summary report by Barb Dorne, the director of executive search services at MSBA. Dorne reported that a record 225 individuals participated in the survey, although this was below the anticipated 1,600 responses. The survey, which was predominantly completed in English, aimed to capture the varied perspectives of parents, students, staff, community members, and business owners. Interestingly, the survey revealed a nearly even split on the importance of previous superintendent experience, with 53% of respondents affirming its necessity, a sentiment echoed more strongly by staff members. Budget and finance expertise, collaborative leadership, and curriculum development emerged as top priorities for the new superintendent across all groups.
The board discussed the alignment of these priorities with the leadership profile, noting that communication skills and transparency were emphasized by six out of seven stakeholder groups. This alignment was depicted through a visual analysis, referred to as an “apples to apples” comparison, which illustrated a strong consensus between public feedback and the board’s priorities.
Additionally, the board reviewed a separate student summary report, which underscored the importance of student feedback in the superintendent selection process. Students highlighted the value of a diverse range of classes, an inclusive school culture, and supportive staff, while also pointing out challenges such as overcrowding and financial pressures. The board agreed to publish this report on the district website to ensure transparency and encourage community engagement.
The meeting also addressed the procedural aspects of the superintendent search, including the upcoming interview process. The board emphasized the need for an ethical, transparent, and fair approach, particularly given the public nature of the position. Interview training materials were distributed, and the importance of crafting behavior-based questions to evaluate candidates effectively was highlighted. The board discussed strategies to ensure diverse community input during interviews, including building tours and structured feedback sessions with community representatives.
Concerns about potential biases and maintaining a fair selection process were also a focal point. The board discussed the importance of managing biases related to age, gender, and familiarity during candidate evaluations. Strategies were proposed to ground discussions in community priorities and ensure that deliberations remain fair and unbiased. The board also deliberated on logistical elements, such as the timing of interviews and the potential impact of live streaming, ultimately deciding against it to maintain fairness.
Furthermore, the board addressed contract negotiations, confirming that while the Minnesota School Boards Association would assist, the board itself would lead the negotiations. Attention was drawn to legal considerations, such as avoiding questions related to protected classes during interviews and ensuring confidentiality by referring to candidates by number rather than name.
