West Central Area School Board Considers Expanding $33 Million Project Plan Amid Community Feedback
- Meeting Overview:
The West Central Area School Board meeting focused on several discussions, with attention given to the community task force’s feedback on a major project plan. The task force, despite short notice, drew an impressive turnout and emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the project, even at a higher cost than initially anticipated. The board also considered collaborating with a local hospital to offer student meals and addressed various financial and administrative matters.
The community task force conveyed a strong preference for a $33 million project plan over a scaled-down $29 million option. The task force stressed the need to ensure that the final plan addresses fitness and Career and Technical Education (CTE) needs, with an emphasis on maintaining the well-regarded CTE program. This would involve exploring soft-covered spaces for CTE activities and ensuring reliable infrastructure, such as water access for meat cutting, which has been challenging during colder months.
Participants in the task force were particularly concerned about incorporating gym and CTE space into the project plans. The feedback suggested a willingness to invest more to secure a comprehensive solution that meets the district’s needs. The board expressed appreciation for the community’s involvement and commitment to the project, noting that nearly full attendance was remarkable given the short notice of the meeting. The focus was on gathering meaningful input while ensuring that the process was not bogged down by excessive questioning.
The board also discussed a legislative update, which included a proposed scholarship opportunity that could provide tax credits for donations to students in both private and public schools. This proposal has generated some controversy. Additionally, there was discussion about extending ticket sales tax funding for the state high school league’s foundation grant through 2035. This grant provides the district with approximately $800 to $1,000 annually to offset activity fees. An initiative to require all coaches to receive CPR and AED training was also discussed, following testimonies from students affected by heart-related incidents.
Financial matters were another focus of the meeting. The board considered payment claims and noted that overall payments were lower than the previous month, with expectations of increased expenses in the coming months due to end-of-year supply orders. Payments included a $15,760.57 total to Cisco for food and $4,951 for plumbing repairs at North Elementary. The checking account balance was reported at $299,256.93, with additional donations totaling $2,475.65.
In terms of donations, the board approved $21,800.15 from the Minnesota Biofuels Association for agricultural travel, $357.50 from Hoops Boosters for a coaching clinic and shooting machine, and $1,900 from the City of Barrett for summer recreation. These donations were accepted unanimously.
The board also addressed a joint powers agreement resolution with the Minnesota Trust, which would allow the district to manage investments. This resolution passed following a roll call vote. Additionally, the board approved a resolution regarding the non-renewal of a probationary teacher’s contract, effective June 30, 2026.
Further resolutions involved the discontinuation of specific positions within the district, including two full-time elementary teachers, one school counselor, and a portion of a physical education teacher’s role. These resolutions faced no opposition and were approved.
The meeting concluded with plans for a special meeting to review and approve a bond referendum committee community survey. This meeting was scheduled for March 24 at 5:00 PM in the media center. The board adjourned without dissent.
