West Essex School Board Celebrates Academic Achievements and Prepares for Future Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting rich with updates and celebrations, the West Essex School Board acknowledged the accomplishments of students and staff, discussed curriculum enhancements, and prepared for future projects, including a proposed bond referendum and a series of educational events.
The meeting’s centerpiece was a presentation by senior Sienna Jacobs, who captivated the board with her independent study on linear algebra and its connection to quantum entanglement. Her exploration included a creative analogy using two decks of cards to explain the concept of quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where the state of one particle instantly reveals the state of another, seemingly defying Einstein’s theory of relativity. Sienna detailed her coursework, which covered systems of linear equations, linear transformations, LU factorization, eigenvalues and inner products, and least squares and singular value decomposition. Her analysis linked these mathematical concepts to applications in quantum mechanics and quantum computing. Board members expressed admiration for her work, noting its relevance to cutting-edge research in quantum mechanics and its implications for future technologies.
Another notable discussion involved the upcoming change in the date of the next board meeting, moved from March 16 to March 23, to accommodate a presentation on the proposed fall 2026 bond referendum. This presentation will outline the reasons for the referendum, the role of state aid, the structure of ballot questions, and the specific projects involved, with an emphasis on engaging the community in the planning process. The bond referendum aims to address building renovations and additions.
The board also celebrated the retirement of several long-serving educators, including Miss Bonnie Jing, a dedicated teacher for 17 years, praised for her professionalism and contributions to the gifted and talented program. Additionally, the retirement of Miss Jenny Tom and Mr. Vin Cartetta was announced, acknowledging their significant impact on the district. Tom played a role in the AP statistics and calculus programs, while Cartetta transformed the computer science program into a thriving initiative that now requires additional staffing.
Greg Ashoff, the math and business supervisor, provided updates on the math and business department, highlighting the success of student participation in DECA and FBLA competitions, where 14 students placed in the top 10 in the state, and two qualified for national competition. The department’s goals focus on cultivating career readiness and providing real-world experiences for students. Ashoff also shared curriculum updates, including the merging of AP macro and microeconomics courses into a unified AP economics course and the introduction of I Ready, a new learning and assessment platform for middle school students. These initiatives aim to improve student understanding and performance, as evidenced by increased passing rates among seventh-grade students who participated in boot camps for NJSLA and NJGPA.
The board recognized the achievements of two distinguished alumni, Riley Friedman and Ryan Ashoff, who credited their success to the support and guidance of their teachers at West Essex. Friedman, currently studying chemical biology, highlighted the positive impact of AP courses and the mentorship she received, while Ashoff, now a research professor with a doctorate in mathematics, emphasized the importance of teacher-student relationships in fostering academic success.
In addition to academic achievements, the meeting highlighted upcoming events aimed at engaging the community and enhancing student learning. The class of 2028’s tricky tray event was celebrated for its success, and the board discussed a series of events scheduled for March, including a “Night of Knowledge” featuring sessions on AI in education, the importance of sleep, and building social-emotional resilience. The high school’s spring musical production of “Chicago Teen Edition” was also announced, with performances planned for March 12-14.
The meeting concluded with committee reports and public comments, during which a member expressed gratitude for the culinary students’ contributions to a recent board retreat. Discussions also touched on plans to update the school district’s website to address community concerns related to the upcoming referendum, emphasizing transparency and engagement with detailed information and presentations.
