One of the most engaging segments of the meeting involved detailed student presentations on cutting-edge scientific topics. An independent study student named Katie presented on the development of mRNA vaccines, detailing their molecular structure and the process by which they trigger immune responses. Her talk included a timeline of mRNA vaccine development, with a focus on the pivotal COVID-19 vaccines. Another student presented on the significance of oral health, discussing how dental checkups can reveal underlying health conditions and the global impact of oral diseases on children.

These student presentations spurred a discussion among board members.

The meeting also featured a presentation on neuroscience, which covered the anatomy of neurons and neurotransmitters, brain regions, and the role of brain plasticity. It also touched on the relationship between stress, mental health, and cognitive processes, as well as the correlation between prion proteins and Alzheimer’s disease.

Plans for upgrading school facilities encompass new ceiling tiles, furniture, cabinets, and gym padding. The Personnel Committee presented motions regarding the appointment of a leave replacement science teacher at West Regional High School, and the Curriculum Committee reported on motions related to special education.

Furthermore, the science department provided an overview of their work, emphasizing the transition to a new science sequence which has resulted in improved student outcomes on the NJSLA science test.
