West Essex School Board Welcomes New Principal and Assistant Principal
- Meeting Overview:
The West Essex School Board recently convened to address developments within the district, including the appointment of a new high school principal, Dr. Westervelt, and a new assistant principal, Amanda Forte. The board’s agenda also featured discussions on the responsibilities of school board members, the importance of faculty relations with students, and the interview process for two candidates vying for a board vacancy.
Dr. Westervelt’s appointment as the high school principal was a focal point of the meeting. With a history of involvement in various committees and programs at the high school, Dr. Westervelt’s qualifications and experience were a topic of discussion. Amanda Forte, who has been a teacher at West Essex for a decade and has taken part in leadership roles and activities, will join Dr. Westervelt in administration as the new assistant principal. Members of the board expressed their support and congratulations to both appointees.
In addition to welcoming the new administrators, the board acknowledged a substantial donation from the Bastante family. A sum of $14,000 was gifted to the school for the purchase of a new wrestling mat.
The responsibilities and expectations of school board members were another key topic of discussion. One board member highlighted the role of supporting the superintendent and adhering to established policies and procedures, while another underscored the importance of serving as ambassadors for the school and safeguarding confidentiality. Trust-building between parents and teachers, the significance of team building in government, and the challenges inherent in decision-making processes were also addressed. Board members emphasized the need for collaboration and community building.
Particular attention was given to the need for improvements in the district, specifically in areas such as social and mental health education, social media awareness, and safety. The impact of politics on the educational environment was also mentioned, with mention of the necessity for students to have a safe and supportive learning environment. Concerns were raised about ensuring faculty and guidance counselors are familiar with all students, not just those who stand out, and the importance of ongoing support and communication.
Faculty relations with students and the critique of outdated testing methodologies were discussed, with a member commending the board’s efforts to keep pace with the changing times. Empowering families with information was stressed, along with the need for reliable faculty members for students to confide in.
The meeting continued with the interview process for two candidates interested in filling a board vacancy. Both candidates shared their backgrounds and experiences. They acknowledged the significant responsibilities and time commitments involved in serving on the board. One candidate discussed her experience with ethics training and the imperative to prioritize family. Another focused on the experience with various stakeholders and a willingness to learn and adapt. Training for board members, including the prospect of attending virtual sessions, was also covered during the discussions.
The meeting concluded with a positive perception of the candidates and the anticipation of their contributions to the board’s objectives. No disagreements or debates were apparent during the discussions, which included moments of levity, such as a request for air conditioning and a brief pause to allow for some fresh air.
