West Orange School Board Discusses Key Legislative Bills and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent West Orange School Board meeting, members delved into crucial legislative bills that could impact school funding, celebrated student and faculty achievements, and addressed various community concerns.
A point of discussion was the collaboration with local legislators on two significant legislative bills, A5966 and S4855, which aim to address issues in the school funding formula. These bills propose to cap the increase in a district’s local fair share year-over-year. This is particularly important for West Orange, where rapid increases in equalized valuation and district income have led to a decrease in aid. The proposed cap would help stabilize state funding. The bills also call for the state Department of Education to release preliminary aid figures earlier, by December instead of February, facilitating better budget planning. Furthermore, the bills demand increased transparency in the funding formula on the state’s website, addressing public concerns about the current opaque process.
Another legislative effort discussed was a bill focusing on special education funding, transitioning from a census-based approach to one based on actual district enrollment. This model has previously resulted in significant additional funding for West Orange. The bill’s passage would ensure the continuation of this funding model and increase extraordinary aid for special education students with high costs. The board plans to pass a resolution supporting these bills and encourages public engagement with local legislators to advocate for these changes.
Meanwhile, the meeting celebrated several noteworthy student and faculty achievements. Theodore Wickham, an 11th grader, was recognized for achieving a perfect score on the PSAT, a feat accomplished by less than 1% of the 1.6 million students who take the test annually. The West Orange High School chess team was also honored for winning the New Jersey K-2 State Scholastic Tournament. The West Orange boys soccer team received accolades for their state championship win, concluding an impressive season with a record of 24 wins and only two losses.
Faculty members were also recognized for their contributions. Felix Plata, supervisor of world languages and ESL for preK-12, was honored for receiving two significant awards for his service to students of all cultures, particularly those of Hispanic heritage. Joy Bernett from Redwood Elementary received the Amistad Commission Exemplary Award.
Public comments during the meeting revealed concerns and proposals from community members. Evette Gordon addressed issues regarding harassment, intimidation, and bullying investigations, urging for thorough and impartial processes. Adam Kramer discussed the complexities of the state funding formula, advocating for a more enrollment-based approach. Will Dano and Abby Fogle expressed appreciation for the board’s engagement in school funding reform and called for continued transparency and collaboration.
A recurring theme was the importance of financial literacy education. A local nonprofit, Corwick, proposed a formal partnership with the district to implement a financial literacy program. Community members emphasized the program’s potential impact, starting with first graders and continuing through high school, preparing students for future financial responsibilities.
The board also addressed safety concerns, particularly regarding event cancellations due to weather conditions. Jason Broome and Debbie Rebert voiced frustration over the cancellation of a dance recital while a cheerleading competition proceeded, questioning the decision-making process.
Finally, the board discussed the removal of printers from classrooms, a decision met with resistance from staff. Josh Goldbarb, representing the West Orange Education Association, highlighted the impact on classroom functionality and called for alternative solutions that did not involve removing essential resources.
