Westfield Council Discusses High School Threat Response and Historic Landmark Designation
- Meeting Overview:
The Westfield Town Council meeting centered on the effective response to a recent firearm threat at Westfield High School and the pending designation of a historic landmark on Westfield Avenue. The council also addressed the approval of the town’s affordable housing plan, upcoming community events, and the ongoing municipal stormwater system assessment.
The council’s discussion began with a detailed account of the rapid response to the firearm threat at Westfield High School. The incident, reported at 11:31 a.m., saw a coordinated effort from Westfield Police Department, with assistance from Garwood and Fanwood Police Departments, Union County Prosecutor’s Office, and Union County Sheriff’s Office. A comprehensive search of the high school was conducted, resulting in no weapon being found, and the lockdown was lifted by 2:49 p.m. The investigation into the source of the threat is ongoing, with the police urging anyone with information to come forward. The council expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the police and Westfield Public Schools, as well as the cooperation of students, staff, and parents.
In a move to preserve the town’s architectural heritage, the council introduced an ordinance to designate the property on Westfield Avenue as a historic landmark. Built in 1908, the home reflects the classic style of early 20th-century Westfield residences. The homeowners, David Gordon and Kathy Ogara, requested the designation, which, if approved, will mark the 18th such landmark in recent years.
The council also reported that the town’s fourth-round affordable housing plan, adopted in December, received formal court approval. Related ordinances will be introduced at the upcoming February 24th meeting.
Attention was also given to the town’s ongoing efforts regarding stormwater management. The Phase 1 watershed inventory report, required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, was discussed. The town engineer, along with a consulting firm, prepared this report, which outlines the design, collection, and maintenance of the municipal stormwater system. The report is available on the town’s website, and further phases are planned for completion by 2027.
The council highlighted various community events, including the Downtown Westfield Corporation’s chocolate tour, the Lifelong Westfield lunch club, and the opening of registration for summer playground camp and pool membership renewals. The Westfield Veterans Banner Program is also accepting submissions to honor veterans and active-duty military personnel.
