Westfield School Board Honors Girls Basketball Champions Amid Budget and Policy Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
The Westfield School Board meeting celebrated the achievements of the Westfield High School girls basketball team, recognized for their recent championship win, while also addressing pressing administrative and policy issues, including the upcoming school budget, technology management in schools, and governance concerns within the board.
One item at the meeting was the recognition of the Westfield High School girls basketball team’s successful season. The team was acknowledged for their dedication and teamwork, culminating in their victory in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2 Group 4 sectional championship. The board celebrated the players’ and coaches’ efforts, with each team member receiving a certificate of recognition from the superintendent. Head coach Liz McKon was invited to speak, expressing gratitude for the recognition and highlighting the team’s record of 23 wins and eight losses. She also noted individual accomplishments, including junior Maren Fowler tying the single-game assist record and senior captain Sophie Lane setting a new single-season scoring record. Senior captain Megan Logan was recognized for her contributions in steals, scoring, assists, rebounding, and blocks over her four-year tenure.
Beyond the celebratory moments, the board delved into discussions about the district’s budget for the 2026-2027 school year. The budget presentation highlighted a total expenditure of $142.5 million, with $128.4 million to be raised through taxes. budget considerations included infrastructure improvements and a notable increase in health insurance costs. The board also noted significant donations, including an anonymous $175,000 contribution for playground equipment at Wilson Elementary.
The meeting also focused on technology management within the district, particularly concerning student devices. The board discussed the potential extension of device restrictions to school buses and events beyond the regular school day. They considered various storage methods and the differentiation of expectations by grade level, along with progressive consequences and confiscation procedures aligned with the student conduct code. The importance of device management tools and strengthening digital citizenship instruction was emphasized to promote healthy technology use.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to governance concerns, particularly related to the board’s proposed action plan. The plan, which included 12 activities aligned with the board’s goals, raised concerns about governance being concentrated among the board president, PPG, and superintendent. A board member expressed the need for shared governance, as outlined by the NJSBA, and highlighted issues with the board’s oversight capabilities, particularly concerning HIB reports. They emphasized the need for improved reporting systems that would facilitate more effective oversight and suggested engaging with vendors to enhance the board’s capabilities.
Furthermore, the board reviewed calendar drafts for the 2028-2029 and 2029-2030 academic years. These drafts proposed starting the school year the day after Labor Day and concluding by mid-June. The board considered the challenges posed by holidays and cultural observances, which could conflict with staff professional development days and disrupt instructional continuity. They expressed interest in strategies to conclude the school year earlier and recognized the need to assess how new cultural observances should be incorporated into the calendar.
The board also addressed personnel matters, announcing the retirement of Dr. Andy Perry, a principal in Westfield Public Schools since 1992 and leader of Washington Elementary School since 2006. Dr. Perry was recognized for his leadership, which contributed to the school being named a national blue ribbon school in 2019.
