Westfield Tackles Vehicle Thefts, Honors Outgoing Public Works Director
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Westfield Town Council meeting centered on several issues, highlighted by the town’s response to an increase in vehicle thefts and the transition of leadership within the Department of Public Works (DPW). The council addressed the 60% rise in vehicle thefts over the past year by discussing the implementation of additional license plate recognition (LPR) cameras and increasing police presence in high-risk areas. The meeting also marked the end of an era with the honoring of outgoing Public Works Director Greg O’Neil for his nine years of service and the introduction of Craig Gibson as the new director.
Westfield Police Department’s commendable achievement in receiving a three-year accreditation set the stage for a discussion on public safety, particularly the spike in car thefts. In 2023, Westfield reported 24 vehicles stolen, a 60% escalation from the previous year, prompting the department to take proactive measures. The tactics include engaging in vehicle pursuits, responding to real-time alerts from LPR cameras, and strategic deployment of resources. The council’s plan to add 10 more LPR cameras aims to bolster these efforts.
In addition to the focus on public safety, the council recognized the significance of diversity and inclusion within the community by declaring January as Muslim Heritage Month, following a proclamation acknowledging the contributions of the Muslim community to Westfield. A resident’s expression of gratitude for the town’s inclusive atmosphere underscored the importance the council places on fostering a welcoming environment for all citizens.
The meeting continued with the transition within the DPW, as the council bid farewell to Greg O’Neil, who served as the Public Works director for nearly a decade. O’Neil expressed his appreciation for the support from the council and the business administrator, highlighting the collaborative efforts among department heads and the dedication of his team. Following O’Neil’s departure, Craig Gibson stepped into the role of director, acknowledging the shoes he had to fill and emphasizing the critical function of the DPW team in the town’s operations.
Mayor Brindle took the opportunity to applaud the department’s performance, particularly during winter weather conditions, and reminded residents of their responsibilities in snow clearing. The mayor also recognized various community events and achievements, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. service, student awards, and the deployment of the first Squadron 107 Calvary regiment.
The council also approved financial matters, including bills and claims amounting to $1,519,994.63, and moved forward with resolutions from the finance policy, code review, and public works committees. These resolutions encompassed amendments to the town code and authorizations for projects and licenses critical to the town’s infrastructure and business operations.
During the open discussion by citizens, Rob Galano brought up the recent Sophia lawsuit, inquiring about the taxpayer dollars spent in its defense and the associated attempt to fire Town attorney Tom Jardine. In response, Mayor Brindle confirmed the expenditure of approximately $20,000 in taxpayer funds on the lawsuit and addressed the statutory requirements for the town attorney position. A council member emphasized the importance of voting based on conscience without prior lists of attorney candidates.
The council’s discussion also touched on the reorganization of the DPW and highlighted the upcoming budget meetings, where public input and feedback are essential for the town’s financial planning. Additionally, the tenure of the town administrator was acknowledged with praise, cementing the stability and continuity in Westfield’s administrative leadership.
