Westfield Town Council Celebrates Legal Victory, Eyes Infrastructure and Community Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Westfield Town Council meeting, the most development was the announcement of the town’s legal victory in a lawsuit concerning the installation of a cell tower, which promises to improve communication infrastructure. Other notable discussions included comprehensive plans for road repaving, initiatives to enhance bicycle safety, and the introduction of new businesses in the downtown area. The council also addressed legislative resolutions and community events.
The town’s legal win in the Superior Court of New Jersey was a focal point of the meeting, as it resolved a contentious lawsuit filed by several Scotch Plains residents regarding a cell tower at the conservation center. The court’s decision allows Westfield to proceed with the installation, which is anticipated to fill coverage gaps in the southwest section of the town. This project, championed by the town administration, will be carried out by AT&T and is expected to enhance cellular service and emergency communication capabilities. The partnership with AT&T includes a lease agreement featuring a donation for local field complex improvements and ongoing lease payments. While potential appeals from the plaintiffs remain a possibility, AT&T is set to move forward with the installation.
Mayor Brindle underscored the significance of this project, emphasizing the benefits for residents and first responders. The ruling aligns with the town’s broader infrastructure goals, which include road repaving and enhancing transportation safety. Approximately 60 roads are scheduled for repaving this year, with 20 being handled by the Elizabeth Town Gas Company. The town itself plans to address 40 roads, with a focus on completing those near schools before the school year begins.
In parallel with road improvements, the council discussed efforts to bolster bicycle safety, an area of concern following the tragic loss of Waji Abdul Hak, a cyclist who recently passed away. The council expressed condolences and commended local cycling organizations for honoring his memory through a memorial ride and the installation of a ghost bike. The mayor highlighted the town’s bike and pedestrian plan adopted in 2019, which includes initiatives such as dedicated bike lanes and improved safety features at intersections. The council encouraged residents to advocate for safer cycling routes and detailed ongoing efforts to pilot bike lanes on East Broad Street.
The meeting also featured the introduction of Dan Toer, the new executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC). Toer expressed his enthusiasm for engaging with the downtown community and building connections to celebrate the town’s unique character. His introduction was followed by Julie Della’s promotion of the sixth annual March to Yorktown Day event, a historical celebration with a parade, reenactments, and family activities. Westfield’s inclusion on the National Parks map was highlighted.
In addition to infrastructure and community events, the meeting covered legislative matters. The Finance Policy Committee reported on several resolutions, including the authorization of affordability assistance grants funded by the affordable housing trust fund and a resolution to renew the town’s membership in the Suburban Municipal Joint Insurance Fund. A notable motion involved awarding the Quimby Streetscape engineering and design plan to Arterial after a competitive proposal process.
The council also addressed various resolutions pertaining to local services, such as installing pedestrian-activated flash beacons in partnership with the county and relocating handicap spaces to improve accessibility. A shared service agreement with the Borough of Fanwood for zoning officer services was approved, highlighting collaborative governance efforts with neighboring towns.
The meeting concluded with the appointment of Marisel Denny as a property owner representative on the DWC board, filling an unexpired term. Denny, known for owning the Lux Threads building, was recognized for her willingness to contribute to the board.
