- Meeting Overview:
The Westport Cable Advisory Committee recently convened to discuss issues including the transition to a high-definition (HD) channel, the introduction of a new position within the TV studio, and the strategic use of social media to reach a broader audience.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the debate on transitioning to an HD channel, which necessitates relinquishing a standard definition channel.
Further, the Committee unveiled a proposal to create a new position at the TV studio, emphasizing that the role would be financed through the cable Reserve fund rather than the town budget. This fund, accumulated from Charter, is designated specifically for the public, educational, and governmental (PEG) channels. The proposal, which includes the job descriptions for the new position, is slated to be included in the town warrant.
The use of the department’s funds was scrutinized, with the Committee keen on setting the correct optics for the program’s expansion. The importance of volunteers was underscored, with plans to set up a workstation for them to access equipment. The potential of expanding the board to include a community member was discussed.
In an era where digital platforms are ever-dominant, the Committee acknowledged the challenges and opportunities of utilizing social media and other online avenues such as YouTube. There was a consensus on the need to merge technology and social media to engage younger demographics and potential voters. The strategy involves not only the dissemination of content but also education on the responsible use of these platforms, including navigating security concerns and managing negative interactions, commonly known as ‘trolling’.
A strong emphasis was placed on the importance of transparency in government and education-related communication. The Committee considered taking a leadership role in fostering positive interactions and clear communication channels. With a noted decline in cable subscribers, the potential of YouTube as an alternative platform was discussed.
Future appointments and plans rounded off the session, with the next meeting date set and the motion to adjourn concluding the proceedings.
