Westport Library Board Discusses Traffic Congestion and Funding Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Westport Library Board of Trustees meeting, discussions focused heavily on the traffic congestion affecting the library and surrounding areas, and the financial contributions from the Friends of the Library, which fund a substantial portion of the library’s budget and operations.
The board’s discussion on traffic congestion highlighted a issue impacting both the library and the nearby elementary school. Congestion has increased, particularly during school pickup times, when the reduction from two to one line for cars in front of the school has created a bottleneck extending to the library’s parking lot. The frequent presence of buses in the library parking area during tennis drop-offs further exacerbates the situation. A suggestion was made to involve the athletic director, who manages scheduling, to potentially alleviate some of these traffic challenges. The board also considered the effectiveness of new reflective signage to help manage the congestion and expressed optimism that these measures might ease the current traffic conditions.
In tandem with traffic concerns, safety issues within the library were also addressed. The board noted the need for improved weather stripping on library doors and the completion of the interior handicap setup. Additionally, an exit sign and an emergency light were identified as non-functional, requiring follow-up to ensure these safety features are addressed. The board also discussed the effectiveness of portable emergency buttons, emphasizing the importance of reinforcing prior discussions with the relevant contacts to ensure these devices are operational. Furthermore, the introduction of a structured identification procedure for students visiting the library has reportedly improved access and reduced disruptive behavior.
The director reported that 83% of the materials budget and the entire programming budget are funded through the Friends’ efforts. The treasurer revealed a recent disbursement of $40,000 to the library for materials, with a current account balance of $70,000. Over the past decade, financial support from the Friends has increased, allowing for greater contributions. The board acknowledged the rise in donor numbers, many of whom expressed gratitude in notes accompanying their membership renewals, signaling strong community support. The demographic of donors was also examined, revealing contributions not only from Westport residents but also from surrounding areas such as Dartmouth and Tiverton. It was suggested that summer residents could be a potential resource for future fundraising efforts, given their periodic absence from the area.
The board also discussed funds available for library improvements, with a minimum of $20,000 earmarked for projects that could enhance the library’s facilities. This amount might increase depending on the results of the ongoing membership drive, which runs annually in October. The board expressed eagerness to coordinate with the Friends to propose capital improvements that would benefit the library.
In terms of community engagement, the board acknowledged the contributions of local organizations and patrons. One member shared an anecdote about educating patrons on the impact their receipts could have on library funding, revealing that $4,000 had been raised through such efforts last year. The board reiterated the importance of community awareness regarding fundraising efforts and proposed expressing gratitude to contributing organizations through the library’s newsletter.
The board also touched on a previous grant application experience, noting that a smaller request might have yielded better results. The newsletter will feature a photograph of new carpeting funded in part by Bay Coast Bank and a donation from the estate of Richard Anderson. The distribution process for the newsletter was outlined, noting that copies would be hand-delivered to the Westport branch and to grant contacts to maintain transparency and promote their support.
Additionally, the board was excited about a new book club being added to the library’s offerings, set to meet on Thursdays at 6 PM. Although there was some initial confusion about the schedule, the addition of the book club was seen as a positive development for the library community.
In other discussions, the board unanimously supported a proposal to close the library on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, aligning with the town’s closure on Thursday and Friday. The holiday schedule for December was reviewed and confirmed, with closures on Christmas Day and a half-day on Christmas Eve, while remaining open on subsequent days.
