Westport Library Trustees Tackle Director Search and Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Westport Library Board of Trustees addressed issues including the search for a new library director, restructuring staff roles, and concerns about parking lot safety. These discussions took precedence over routine maintenance and improvement projects, as well as programming and fundraising initiatives for the summer reading program.
The search for a new library director was a major topic. The Trustees considered hiring an independent contractor to assist with the search, with one member highlighting the contractor’s recommendations for enhancing the library’s online presence and budget. The discussion extended to a potential reorganization of staff roles, suggesting that administrative tasks could be shifted to the assistant director, freeing up space to resume focus on children’s programs. This proposal led to a debate over the feasibility of such a reorganization, including the qualifications of the assistant director and the potential effects on library operations. The board also discussed the need to update job descriptions and the employment agreement for the director and assistant director and to understand the town’s requirements for these changes. A motion concluded the conversation, mandating further investigation into the proposed restructuring and the potential need to dissolve the director search committee, which might be repurposed for hiring other positions such as an assistant director or circulation desk staff.
Safety concerns regarding the library parking lot were also a point of discussion. Described as a disaster due to congestion, the Trustees debated the idea of stationing a police officer to manage the flow of traffic during the busiest hours. This issue underscored the broader topic of safety and led to the proposal to establish standing committees focused on building and grounds, as well as personnel safety.
Other items on the agenda included various maintenance and improvement projects. The board discussed the treatment of outdoor benches, obtaining estimates for necessary work, and addressing the state of the walkway. Additionally, the board talked about stocking up on custodial, book covering, and office supplies, and considered purchasing bean bag chairs for the children’s section.
The sale of postcards at the book sale was a topic of debate, raising questions about tax implications and alignment with the library’s 501(c)(3) status. The board eventually approved the sale of postcards, with proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Library. Plans for the summer reading program included holding a raffle and selling photographs as part of the fundraising efforts. The potential need to manage poison hemlock in the library garden was also mentioned, as well as the idea of selling pens and tote bags.
