Westport Select Board Approves Infrastructure and Licenses Amid Community Engagement Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Westport Select Board meeting, developments unfolded as the board navigated a range of infrastructural, administrative, and community-related matters. Chief among these were the board’s decisions on infrastructure projects, including the handling of the Kirby Bridge project, as well as the approval of various licenses for local businesses and community events.
The Kirby Bridge project emerged as a focal point of discussion. A letter was prepared for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT), communicating the board’s decision to halt progress on the current design due to concerns over its aesthetic impact and implications for the local neighborhood. The motion to send this letter was unanimously approved.
Simultaneously, the board addressed a proposal for a $500,000 funding application to Mass DOT under the Complete Streets program, aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cyclist accessibility on Samford Road. Approval of the application was seen as vital, with the board emphasizing that failure to pursue this grant could eliminate potential funding opportunities. The board’s unanimous vote to proceed highlighted their dedication to securing state support for local infrastructure projects.
The meeting also involved the approval of a variety of licenses and permits. A comprehensive review of auto sales and service licenses was conducted, including businesses like Auto Plus Motor Cars and Hometown Motors. Notably, the board corrected a listing error for Harry’s Country Store. The motion to approve these licenses passed with broad support, barring one absence.
Further, the board approved a one-day all-alcohol license for the Holy Ghost Club’s upcoming fish fry event, scheduled for October 3rd. This approval was part of a larger effort to support community activities that foster local engagement. The board also reviewed entertainment and innkeeper licenses, maintaining an organized approach despite the extensive list of applications.
In administrative matters, the board discussed an amendment to the contract of Interim Town Administrator James Hartnett, allowing him to continue in a part-time capacity post-retirement. Hartnett expressed his readiness to aid in the transition, and the board unanimously agreed to the amendment.
Community engagement remained a priority, as evidenced by the board’s approval of a “trunk or treat” event for Kadamanka Nursery School and the successful e-recycling event hosted by Westport River Watershed.
The board also addressed issues related to ongoing road work on Route 6, slated for completion by the end of October, weather permitting. The contractor, Keading, received commendations for their professionalism and effective traffic management during previous projects on Main Road, Sanford Road, and Old County.
Additionally, the Affordable Housing Trust’s efforts to secure land for development were discussed. The trust is seeking property to replicate successful projects like No Choke Village, with an emphasis on acquiring land strategically to minimize costs. The board recognized the importance of affordable housing and the challenges in securing necessary subsidies.
The Economic Development Committee reported full membership and new leadership, with a focus on revitalizing the farmers market and implementing audio upgrades for enhanced functionality. A proposal to dissolve the Internet Advisory Committee was also considered due to inactivity.
