The Mariner Middle School HVAC improvements were outlined, with costs around $12.5 million, focusing on structural reinforcements and new ceilings. Sunrise Park’s renovations, reported at $29 million, involved upgrades to district offices and community spaces. The board expressed gratitude for the improvements, emphasizing the importance of providing safe and modern facilities for students.

The board also addressed radon safety, which was prompted by a member’s personal anecdote about the dangers of poor air quality in schools. The district’s emergency and safety supervisor explained the importance of regular radon testing, noting that the district collaborates with the Institute for Environmental Assessment to ensure air quality. Recent tests at the high school showed no concerning radon levels, with future testing scheduled for other schools. The board acknowledged the diligence in monitoring air quality.

Superintendent Dr. Kazmierczak’s performance evaluation was another focal point, with the board affirming his continued leadership in areas such as communication, fiscal responsibility, and policy development. This led to the approval of a new three-year contract for Dr. Kazmierczak, extending from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029. A clerical error regarding the contract end date was corrected during the meeting, and the contract was approved with one abstention due to a member’s absence from the evaluation meeting.

Operational adjustments were also discussed, particularly the proposal to increase substitute teaching rates to remain competitive with neighboring districts. The board approved the rate increase to attract more substitutes, acknowledging the challenging recruitment environment. The current fill rate for substitutes was reported at 87%.
