Whittier Regional Technical School Committee Celebrates Parade Triumph and Approves Key Budget Transfers
- Meeting Overview:
The Whittier Regional Technical School Committee meeting highlighted the school’s recent success in local parades, the approval of budgetary adjustments in response to finalized staff contracts, and various student activities and achievements.
At the forefront of the meeting was the commendation of Whittier Tech’s participation in local parades, particularly the Haverhill parade, where the school’s holiday float won the grand prize. This achievement was a collaborative effort involving diverse departments, including art, HVAC, electronics, robotics, and carpentry. The committee expressed gratitude towards Paul Murray and the art department for their integral role in the float’s design and execution.
The committee then turned its attention to fiscal matters, with a presentation from the business manager on necessary budget adjustments. During the budget preparation for FY26, additional funds were allocated in the instructional line as a reserve due to unsettled contracts for teachers and support staff. However, the finalized contracts exceeded the anticipated 3% increase, prompting the need for salary line adjustments to reflect the actual contractual rates and accommodate changes due to attrition and lane changes. The committee unanimously approved the transfer request.
Adding to the financial updates, the committee reviewed a request for proposals (RFP) issued in October for a new water heater. After receiving six bids, Burkens Suns Plumbing and Heating emerged as the lowest responsible bidder at $74,354. Additionally, the committee accepted eight donations totaling $45,950, reflecting strong community support and engagement with the school.
Student activities were another focal point, with the student representative providing a report on fall and winter sports, club activities, and upcoming events. The football team’s journey to the vocational Super Bowl for the second consecutive year was highlighted. The transition to winter sports was marked by substantial participation, with basketball and wrestling drawing significant interest. Over 70 students were rostered across the basketball teams, and wrestling saw around 80 participants, including 15 girls. Student clubs were equally active, with the Interact Club and National Technical Honor Society noted for their community service initiatives, including a Veterans Day breakfast and a successful coat drive organized by the multicultural club.
The committee also addressed the upcoming performance of “The Addams Family,” scheduled for March, and preparations for staff and student activities preceding the holiday break. The superintendent praised students for their performances at recent events, including a veterans breakfast and a one-act play.
In other administrative matters, the appointment of Nick Wheeler to the school building committee was confirmed following a roll call vote. The committee discussed policy IKF, which needed approval by the end of December, and unanimously passed it on its first reading.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on the athletic trainer position, which had become vacant. Despite advertising the position at a stipend salary of $33,000, there was a lack of applicants, prompting discussions on increasing the salary to attract suitable candidates. The committee recognized the demanding nature of the role and emphasized the need for appropriate compensation.
In closing, the committee approved the first reading of several policies and extended holiday wishes to all members. The chair acknowledged the contributions of a departing member.
