Wildwood Crest Borough Council Faces Debate Over $300,000 Park Barrier Installation
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting, discussions centered around community concerns including a debate over a proposed $300,000 park barrier installation, infrastructure developments, and ongoing parking issues.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the debate over the proposed installation of barriers within the community, specifically a $300,000 project at a local park. One speaker voiced strong opposition, questioning the necessity of the barriers by suggesting that a “potential problem analysis” would reveal a low probability of incidents justifying such expenditure. This individual, aligning with Mr. Franco, urged the council to reconsider, stating, “Knock it off. It’s all not unnecessary.” The speaker argued that similar measures had not been adopted by neighboring communities, such as Washington Mall and Cape May, and expressed concern that this spending could impose ongoing financial strain on the borough.
The Chief of Police was invited to comment but deferred, leading the speaker to further elaborate. They cited past incidents of vehicle-borne threats as adequately addressed by existing measures on New Jersey Avenue and at Fern Park. Another attendee countered by emphasizing the value of life and the importance of mitigating even the smallest risks. The debate expanded to a broader discussion on security protocols, with calls for evidence to support the necessity of such costly measures and concerns about the financial implications.
Beyond the barrier discussion, the council addressed infrastructure and development projects. A notable acquisition was the purchase of an odd-shaped property behind the Crest Pool for approximately $770,000. The rationale for this purchase was to prevent a residential property from abutting the pool and to potentially develop buildable lots in the future if needed for revenue. However, the immediate purpose for the land remains undetermined, with options open for future council decisions.
The council also reviewed ongoing infrastructure projects, including updates on the New Jersey Avenue Infrastructure Project set to commence in mid-October. The project includes improvements to the sanitary sewer and water main, with modifications to parking delineation to optimize space. Community members were informed of a scheduled public presentation on November 6 to share plans.
Parking issues were a recurring theme, with community members expressing concerns about inadequate parking spaces amid property developments featuring three-bedroom houses with only one off-street parking space. The speaker highlighted that garages often serve as storage rather than parking, leading to cars spilling onto streets and exacerbating flooding issues. It was suggested that the planning board reconsider regulations to better accommodate parking needs.
Another resident proposed planting native trees, such as red cedars, which are salt-tolerant and require less maintenance, to serve as natural barriers and enhance the landscape. This idea was noted for further discussion with the planning board.
In the public comments segment, Dennis Hall raised parking difficulties related to a property auction and the need for additional spaces to develop residential units. Hall proposed a partnership with the borough, emphasizing that “you can never have enough parking, especially on a barrier island.” Similarly, Fran Fowler, owner of the Jellyfish Cafe, echoed concerns about parking and urged the borough to address the issue proactively.
The council also addressed a question about property assessments, with a caller inquiring about the disparity between market values and assessed values in Wildwood Crest. It was confirmed that a revaluation was anticipated by the end of 2026 or into 2027, pending formal notice from the county taxation board.
Concluding the meeting, reminders were issued regarding upcoming changes to trash collection schedules and recognition of the successful summer beach patrol efforts.
