Wildwood Crest Council Applauds Blizzard Response, Advances Affordable Housing, and Plans Senior Programs
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting was dominated by discussions about the community’s response to a severe blizzard, the passage of significant affordable housing ordinances, and the introduction of new programs for senior citizens. The council also approved various resolutions and addressed future digital transformation needs for municipal records.
A substantial portion of the meeting was devoted to acknowledging the efforts of the municipal departments in managing the aftermath of a severe blizzard that struck Wildwood Crest from February 22nd to 23rd. The mayor expressed deep gratitude to the public works department, which was praised for its relentless snow removal efforts and commitment to public safety during and following the storm. The public works crew operated continuously, clearing roads and managing storm-related issues to ensure the town’s safety. The mayor commended their dedication, stating that the staff’s hard work did not go unnoticed and that it contributed to the safety of Wildwood. The praise was echoed by residents who provided unprecedented positive feedback regarding the cleanup operations.
Steve Shear, the superintendent of the public works department, took the opportunity to recount the department’s preparations, which began with monitoring weather forecasts predicting an initial six inches of snow that eventually surpassed twelve inches. He highlighted the collaborative efforts across various municipal departments, emphasizing the teamwork that facilitated effective snow removal. This recognition segment underscored the importance of interdepartmental cooperation in times of crisis and the value of proactive planning.
Following the recognition, the council addressed two ordinances related to affordable housing, both of which passed unanimously. Ordinance 1479 aims to repeal and replace Chapter 85, Article 21, focusing on affordable housing regulations, while Ordinance 1480 deals with development fees, repealing and replacing Chapter 85, Article 22. Both ordinances were moved to second reading and final passage without public comment.
The council also approved a range of resolutions, including the authorization for the borough engineer to undertake work on the Scoop Taylor basketball courts with a budget cap of $22,000. Appointments to the Wildwood Crest Recreation Commission were confirmed, and Robert Lloyd was appointed as Chief of Police and Deputy Coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management. Other resolutions included the procurement of bike racks, awarding contracts for portable toilets and landscaping services, and authorizing a professional services contract for legal services with a budget not exceeding $50,000. Additionally, the council approved an emergency temporary budget for 2026 and the advertisement of a notice to bidders for Centennial Park Improvements.
New initiatives for senior citizens were also introduced during the meeting. Laura Frell, the borough’s wellness coordinator, presented an overview of programs designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors. These include a new senior directory on the borough’s recreation page, the launch of the Crest Silver Shells social club offering recreational activities, and various fitness programs such as chair yoga and Walking Wednesdays. Frell encouraged community involvement through the Crest Care card program, which invites artistic residents to create greeting cards for seniors.
The council members discussed the importance of disseminating information to seniors who may not have digital access, highlighting the need for physical flyers and direct outreach. A light-hearted exchange occurred regarding the definition of a senior and the availability of a senior discount card.
The issue of digitizing municipal records was addressed, prompted by storage challenges and potential risks from disasters. The overwhelming quantity of paperwork accumulated over decades has led the council to consider transitioning to digital formats, starting with construction documents. This initiative aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance accessibility for employees. The council recognized similar efforts by neighboring municipalities and discussed the potential benefits of this digital transformation.
Old business topics included the status of the historical museum project, which remains on hold, and ongoing efforts to secure funding for traffic calming measures and dredging projects. The council aims to maintain momentum on these initiatives, especially given the pending status of the dredging project since 2015.
In lighter moments, the council announced Junior Officials Day, set for June 3, and expressed gratitude to various departments for their effective communication during recent weather challenges. The meeting concluded with public comments, although no attendees chose to speak, and a motion to adjourn was unanimously agreed upon.
