Wildwood Crest Council Approves State Disaster Declaration Request Amid Coastal Damage
- Meeting Overview:
The Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting saw several resolutions passed, including a call for the Governor of New Jersey to declare a state of emergency for the Jersey Shore following recent coastal storm damage. This resolution, along with various other important measures, received unanimous support from the council members present.
The most notable development was the council’s decision to urge the governor to declare a state of emergency and issue a state disaster declaration for the Jersey Shore. The recent coastal storm damage has prompted the council to take this step.
In addition to the disaster declaration request, the council approved an emergency contract with Asphalt Paving Systems for urgent road repairs on Farragate Road. The need for immediate action was emphasized, with work reportedly already underway.
The meeting also involved financial and operational decisions, including the approval of a contract with the Cape May County Herald to ensure compliance with New Jersey Public Law regarding electronic publications of legal notices.
A discussion also took place regarding the abatement of fees for Kobe Dogs LLC due to construction delays. The company had already paid in full for 2025, and the council addressed concerns surrounding the delays, particularly the relocation of a shed expected by year-end. The resolution was passed after considering the financial implications and the company’s current payments.
Another topic was the acceptance of a $4,865 donation for public access contributions related to the Sunset Lake waterway project. The council clarified that these funds would be allocated for purchasing picnic tables to enhance public access to the area. However, challenges in expanding kayak launches and installing permanent bike racks due to state permitting requirements were discussed, highlighting regulatory hurdles that the council aims to address.
The council extended contracts for interim borough administrator Francine B. Springer and deputy borough administrator Patricia A. Feicetex until a permanent appointment is made.
Additionally, the council reappointed several members to various boards and commissions, including Brian Milkar to the Planning Board and Patrick Davenport as chair. These decisions were part of the council’s efforts to maintain experienced leadership across its advisory committees.
The meeting also featured a discussion on the beach box rental program, which has grown since its inception. The program currently offers 594 rental boxes, each with two doors, and generates substantial revenue for the municipality. Changes to the registration process were announced, moving away from a first-come, first-served online system to accepting phone calls and establishing a waiting list.
Public safety was another focus of the meeting. Reports from Chief Lloyd and OEM Coordinator Billy Crips detailed the borough’s emergency response efforts and the successful navigation of the hurricane season. The council also discussed ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Crest Fishing Pier, supported by a $2.5 million grant, and planned renovations for the borough hall.
