Wildwood Crest Secures $1.1 Million for Fishing Pier, Discusses Additional Funding Amid Cost Increase
- Meeting Overview:
The Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting covered a range of topics, notably the major update on the fishing pier project, which has secured $1.1 million from a boardwalk preservation trust fund. The council aims to gather an additional $2.5 million from the Cape May County Open Spaces Board to meet the project’s revised estimate of $7 million. Other notable discussions included the termination of participation in the State Health Benefits Program, the introduction of Ordinance 1468 for road improvements, and various resolutions related to public health and infrastructure.
The fishing pier project was a primary focus, as the council has already secured $1.1 million in funds. However, the cost of the project has increased from an initial estimate of $6 million to approximately $7 million. To address this financial gap, the council authorized an application for $2.5 million from the Cape May County Open Spaces Board, targeting a total of $3.6 million in funding. The council is considering “value engineering” to maximize the use of available funds by utilizing the existing pier structure and extending it over the water. Proposed enhancements include new decking, lighting, railings, and handicap access.
During the public comment period, concerns were raised about the project’s long-term viability due to potential beach erosion. Questions also arose regarding updates on the dune project. The council listened to suggestions for improving the back beach area, including using sand fencing to capture sand, which is planned for the fall in collaboration with the environmental engineer.
In health-related matters, the council passed a resolution to terminate participation in the State Health Benefits Program and approved agreements with Braven Health for medical insurance and prescription services. An amendment to a prior resolution on appointing a health insurance brokerage consultant was also passed.
The council introduced Ordinance 1468, aimed at appropriating $650,000 for road improvements across Wildwood Crest. The ordinance passed unanimously on its second and final reading, with no public comments received during the hearing. Additionally, resolutions for professional survey services, tax cancellations for a disabled veteran, and the licensing agreement for pool use by Wildwood Catholic Academy were approved.
Public safety and infrastructure projects were also discussed. The New Jersey Avenue infrastructure project, which includes sanitary sewer and water connections, is set to commence soon. The back beach excavation project is under consideration for the fall and into the next year, with the dredging project still in the acquisition phase.
Commissioner remarks highlighted the success of a recent air show and raised concerns about ongoing park renovations, particularly at Centennial Park, where nearly $300,000 has been quoted for barriers. The financial pressures of these projects were emphasized, especially given the potential $2 million to $5 million expenditure on a building project and additional costs for security cameras.
The meeting concluded with a resolution to enter an executive closed session to discuss safety and security tactics, potential litigation over a bulkhead violation, and employment terms for a specific position. The resolution passed unanimously.
