Wildwood Crest Unveils $13 Million New Jersey Avenue Revitalization Project
- Meeting Overview:
The Wildwood Crest Borough Council meeting focused on community projects, with the most attention given to the New Jersey Avenue revitalization project, estimated to cost around $13 million. The initiative aims to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly hub, improve roadway infrastructure, and enhance local business environments. The council also addressed concerns about parking, safety measures, and infrastructure improvements across the borough, engaging with community members on these topics.
The New Jersey Avenue revitalization project was the primary focus of the meeting, with plans presented for the reconstruction of the roadway. The project involves removing the existing asphalt and subbase, installing a new six-inch dense graded aggregate subbase, and topping it with a seven-and-a-half-inch thick asphalt paving section. The initiative aims to maintain the current curb-to-curb width while replacing the existing concrete curb and gutter. Importantly, the project includes the replacement of concrete sidewalks to ensure proper grading and drainage.
A key feature of the revitalization is the introduction of traffic calming measures, including a center landscaped median and a dedicated bike lane in both directions. Epoxy stripes and thermoplastic markings will be used for road and crosswalk markings. The project, funded largely by federal and county grants, is designed to support greater pedestrian accessibility while maintaining efficient vehicular traffic flow. The county will finance all roadway enhancements and traffic signal upgrades, contributing $10.4 million, with Wildwood Crest responsible for $2.4 million. Federal funding accounts for $3.7 million, and county aid exceeds $6 million, covering 81.2% of the project through grants.
The project is set to unfold in two phases, beginning on September 7, 2026, and is scheduled for completion by May 15, 2028. The first phase will address the stretch from Rambler Road to Coline Road, while the second phase will cover from Coline to Cresy Avenue. Notably, the initiative features the development of a new community hub, Crest Station, which will include off-street parking, decorative area lighting, and streetscape treatments to create a community meeting space.
Community members voiced their concerns about the impact of construction on local businesses, traffic flow, and parking availability. Residents sought assurances that businesses would remain accessible during construction, and the council confirmed efforts to minimize disruption. The importance of maintaining traffic flow, especially for delivery trucks, was emphasized. Residents were assured that strategic planning is in place to accommodate business operations without hindering traffic.
Parking concerns were a recurring theme, with discussions about diagonal parking, the preservation of existing parking spaces, and the introduction of bike lanes. The council clarified that despite geometric reconfigurations and bumpouts, there would be no net loss of parking spaces. Residents were invited to provide feedback, and the council committed to considering public input in the ongoing development of the project.
In addition to the New Jersey Avenue project, the council discussed the borough’s infrastructure improvements, including street paving and maintenance. They acknowledged the condition of streets affected by utility work, which resulted in unsightly “checkerboard marks” where new asphalt met old. The council plans to revise ordinances regarding utility company street openings to improve street aesthetics and consistency.
The meeting also addressed community concerns regarding safety and accessibility. Residents raised issues about the interaction between golf carts, electric bikes, and pedestrians, with suggestions for designated parking for golf carts to optimize space usage. The council confirmed that New Jersey Avenue would remain a truck route, given its role as an emergency evacuation route, and encouraged residents to report specific concerns for further investigation.
Residents expressed support for the revitalization project, citing potential enhancements to property values and community appeal. The council acknowledged the need for ongoing dialogue with business owners to ensure the project aligns with community interests. The inclusion of bike racks and other amenities in the project plans was confirmed, with discussions about incorporating additional features like water elements and holiday lighting to create a vibrant downtown atmosphere.
