- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Willingboro Town Council meeting, steps were taken to advance local infrastructure and public safety initiatives. Notably, the council introduced ordinances for emergency road repairs using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, addressed the implementation of body-worn cameras for law enforcement, and discussed the community’s concerns over the repaving of Lake Drive. The meeting also featured discussions on community programs, new hires, and the celebration of local heroes.
Central to the discussions, the council addressed several ongoing infrastructure projects poised to impact the community significantly. The reconstruction of Marshall Lane and the dedication of the Sportsman field to become Lizzy Morris field were front and center. Additionally, the council provided updates on the Public Service Electric and Gas Company’s (PSEG) gas line replacement and road paving projects. Plans to widen Lake Drive were discussed, alongside the progress of emergency repairs on Charleston Road and the repair of the Penny Packer pool floor crack.
Public safety was another key focus, with the police department launching a new Traffic Division aimed at better enforcement of traffic regulations and the introduction of new officers. A significant drug raid that led to the seizure of illegal substances from a suspected distribution center marked a notable achievement for the department. In a move to enhance officer accountability and transparency, the council introduced resolutions for body-worn cameras for the public safety department.
This concern for the well-being of the community extended to the acknowledgment of the retirement of two police sergeants and the recognition of firefighters for their heroism.
In the realm of community development, the council celebrated the opening of the Country Club pool and organized successful events like the National Get Outdoors Day and the ongoing Friday Night series. Upcoming events such as a blood drive, live music series, and a borough barbecue were also highlighted.
The financial health of the township was a topic of note, with the municipal summary revealing that revenues were exceeding expectations, with a collection of over 75% of anticipated revenue, while expenditures were at around 46% of the budgeted appropriations. The inspections department completed several inspections, issued violations, and collected notable revenue.
The council also focused on the town’s aesthetic and environmental efforts by employing new Clean Community ambassadors to clean the streets and announcing the placement of new trash receptacles throughout the township. In addition, the council supported the beautification of garden beds outside the JFK Center, further reflecting their commitment to the town’s appearance and environmental concerns.
Public engagement was encouraged, with the council inviting residents to participate in a master planning process through a survey available on the Township website and social media platforms. During the public comments section, residents expressed their concerns and requests for support, particularly regarding the paving of Lake Drive, with emphasis on the importance of considering drainage, public parking, and enforcement of parking regulations.
The council also grappled with the need to accommodate the growing programs of the Willingboro Recreation Competition team and the Willingboro Panthers cheerleading team. The conversation highlighted the challenges of providing adequate practice space for multiple organizations and the potential use of alternative spaces such as local church gyms and outdoor areas.
In administrative terms, the council approved minutes for the June meetings and discussed a streamlined process for raffle license applications. Moreover, the council introduced new interns and employees in the IT, finance, and inspections departments.
Finally, the council did not overlook the importance of acknowledging significant societal contributions and remembrances. The passage of the Civil Rights Act was noted, and well wishes for Lupus Awareness Month and Independence Day were extended. The council also congratulated Dr. Ashanti Holly on becoming the new superintendent of schools for Burlington County Institute of Technology.
