Willmar City Council Advances Fiber Network Amidst Right-of-Way Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Willmar City Council meeting focused on developments in the city’s fiber network project, the upcoming comprehensive plan work session, and community events. An amendment to the fiber network phase one project was approved, addressing right-of-way issues across 76 parcels. The meeting also highlighted preparations for a joint work session on the comprehensive plan and upcoming community events, including a heritage festival and an Earth Day celebration.
The most important topic discussed was the amendment to the fiber network phase one project. The council approved Amendment Number One, which aims to address right-of-way cleanup and establish easements across 76 parcels within the project area. This amendment, deemed necessary by city staff, will facilitate the creation of utility easements for the fiber network and future city projects. During the discussion, it was noted that some of these easements would be essential for upcoming street construction projects, such as on 16th Street. The council deliberated on whether these costs should be associated with the fiber project or future street projects, with staff members agreeing to review the allocation of funds.
Another point on the agenda was the final work session for the comprehensive plan, scheduled for May 1st at the Willmar Community Center. This session will focus on various chapters, including housing, parks, open space, arts, culture, natural resources, and implementation strategies. City officials invited public participation and will engage directors from various departments to discuss planning needs and strategies.
The council also took time to promote community engagement through upcoming events. The International Heritage Festival is set for Friday at the Willmar Senior High, featuring a flag parade, food sampling, and cultural programs. Additionally, the “Healthy Earth, Healthy Kids” event on Saturday at the Civic Center will focus on environmental education, coinciding with Earth Day celebrations. The meeting concluded with an invitation to the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on May 1st.
