Winslow School Board Discusses Strategic Planning and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Winslow School Board meeting focused on strategic planning for the district’s future and celebrated significant student achievements in academics and athletics. The discussions included the introduction of a strategic planning process, updates on various student support programs, and acknowledgment of the district’s athletic successes.
A primary focus of the meeting was the introduction of a strategic planning process, which aims to outline a five-year roadmap for the Winslow School District. This plan is designed to enhance student achievement and involve multiple stakeholders in its development. The process, facilitated by Michelle Kennedy from the New Jersey School Boards Association, will include a series of meetings to gather input and build consensus among participants. These meetings will begin with a kickoff session in September, followed by three additional meetings in the ensuing months. The strategic planning will involve activities to identify the district’s strengths and challenges, envision its future, and develop actionable goals and objectives.
The facilitator outlined the phases of the strategic planning, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder contributions and consensus building. The process will culminate in a final presentation to the board in March for approval. The cost of facilitation was discussed, amounting to $4,500, with payment options over two school cycles. The board members expressed unanimous support for engaging the strategic planning service.
Another highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Miss Darshell Brooks, who provided an overview of the middle and high school youth services program. She described the program as “New Jersey’s best-kept secret,” offering mental health support, academic assistance, employment coaching, and wellness services tailored to students’ needs. The program’s adaptability, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, was a focal point. Brooks emphasized the creation of “safe spaces” where students can access mental health resources, decompress, and receive support during school hours. The youth thrive program, part of the middle school initiative, focuses on student leadership through workshops and community service.
Brooks also discussed several initiatives aimed at enhancing student experiences, such as college tours, crisis intervention services, and leadership development workshops. These programs have been instrumental in helping students visualize their futures in higher education and cultivate leadership skills. A notable success was the instant decision days, where universities awarded scholarships totaling over $30,000. Partnerships with organizations like the Camden County Workforce Investment Board have provided students with apprenticeships and summer paid internships, offering valuable career opportunities.
The meeting also celebrated the district’s athletic achievements. The girls’ indoor track team had a standout season, winning multiple championships and achieving a GPA of 3.89. They were crowned NJSIAA group three state champions, marking their 11th state indoor championship, a record for any public school girls’ team in New Jersey. Special recognition was given to athletes like Jasmine Jackson and Annabelle Cassidy for their performances. The boys’ indoor track team also had a successful season, winning the Olympic Conference Championship and placing second overall at the state championship meet.
In addition to track, the boys’ basketball team qualified for the state playoffs and finished with a commendable overall record. The wrestling program also saw individual successes, with wrestlers achieving notable records and earning medals at tournaments. The board discussed proposals for athletic improvements, such as installing a shot clock for varsity basketball and recognizing girls’ wrestling as an independent sport.
The meeting concluded with various committee updates and announcements. The technology committee reported on a recent audit. Wi-Fi improvements and the rollout of personal Chromebooks for middle and high school students were also discussed. School representatives highlighted upcoming events and successful fundraisers, such as a readathon and a color run, which raised significant funds and engaged the community.
