Winslow School Board Tackles Financial Compliance and Celebrates Athletic Triumphs
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Winslow School Board addressed multiple issues, from financial compliance challenges related to the food service fund to impressive athletic achievements. The board examined audit findings, initiated corrective action plans, and highlighted the success of the district’s sports teams, notably the girls’ indoor track team securing their seventh consecutive championship.
22:41The meeting’s primary focus was on the audit findings concerning the Winslow Township School District’s financial compliance. A significant portion of the discussion centered on the food service fund, which exceeded the permissible net cash resource limit as set by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. This was a recurring issue from the previous year, raising concerns among board members about potential repercussions from state and federal entities. The audit revealed that increased meal reimbursement rates during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to an accumulation of cash in the fund. The representative from Bowen Company stressed the necessity of adhering to compliance requirements, noting, “We have to know… an automatic finding again,” underscoring the importance of proactive financial management.
0:28The representative suggested that upgrading cafeteria facilities could mitigate the surplus cash issue, although the purchasing processes involved are complex and could delay implementation. Despite this challenge, the district maintained a clean financial statement opinion. The board committed to implementing a corrective action plan to address the audit finding, with a member stating, “We will implement the corrective action plan to address this condition.”
22:41In addition to financial matters, the Winslow School Board celebrated the district’s athletic achievements. Reports from the athletic committee highlighted the football team’s commendable academic performance, boasting a GPA of 2.9, and their record of 10-5. An honorary banquet was planned to celebrate the state champion football team. The girls’ indoor track team’s triumph was a standout moment, as they clinched their seventh consecutive indoor group three relay championship. The atmosphere surrounding Winslow athletics was described as “something to behold,” with gratitude extended to students and staff for their dedication.
1:00:44The meeting also featured presentations on community initiatives, notably the “A Few Good Men” mentoring program. This program, launched by the nonprofit organization Loving Our Cities, aims to support at-risk middle school boys in Winslow Township. Since its inception in 2011, the program has mobilized around 30 male volunteers annually to mentor over 600 students across 12 high schools in South Jersey. The pilot program at Winslow Township Middle School began on January 9, 2023, focusing on character development and leadership training. The curriculum includes lessons on emotional intelligence, social media responsibility, and stress management. The program’s representative emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing youth challenges, stating, “There are a myriad of factors contributing to this crisis which the school and school boards did not cause; however, you are faced with having to solve the problem.”
Board members expressed strong support for the mentoring initiative, acknowledging the critical role of community programs in enhancing student development. One board member remarked, “Programs like this can only enrich and help our students grow and become better people in society.” The church’s involvement in the program was also praised, with a member commenting, “These are the things that we need to do to make sure that our children… get everything that they need.”
Further discussions addressed future initiatives, including a summer reading program and the resumption of the “Perfecting Chords” music after-school program, both of which aim to support students’ educational growth. The board recognized the Perfecting Church for its contributions to these programs, expressing appreciation for the positive impact on student growth and community engagement.
As the meeting concluded, the board moved into an executive session to discuss a specific student matter and employment conditions. The session was expected to last between 25 to 30 minutes, with a roll call vote confirming the decision to proceed.
