Winthrop City Council Votes to End Christmas Tree Pickup Program
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Winthrop City Council addressed several community issues, the most notable being the decision to end the city’s Christmas tree pickup program. Other topics included updates to the library board bylaws and the approval of a new library board member.
The city council deliberated on the future of the Christmas tree pickup program after receiving a request from Gaylord Sanitation to discontinue it. The sanitation service reported that only eight trees were collected this year, despite extensive promotion efforts, leading to inefficiencies in fuel and labor costs. The council considered the use of alternative disposal methods, such as encouraging residents to drop trees at designated organic waste areas. A motion to end the program was passed after a brief discussion.
The council also reviewed updates to the library board bylaws. The library board representatives presented revisions that included changes to budget preparation responsibilities and meeting schedules. The council approved these updates, which aim to better align the board’s duties with city procedures and the availability of its members. Additionally, the council approved a motion to appoint Andrea Graves as a new library board member. Her appointment was noted as a positive step in diversifying the board’s representation, with the board expressing appreciation for new perspectives.
Lastly, the council discussed the replacement of a 1968 snowblower unit, which has frequently broken down during heavy snowfall. After evaluating a used Laru D50 unit with low operational hours, the council considered it a suitable replacement. The unit has already been inspected and tested, with the council poised to decide its purchase contingent on budgetary approval.
