- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Woodbridge Township Council, the most significant occurrence was the honoring of local police officers for exceptional service, with Officer Siman Jena being named Police Officer of the First Quarter for 2024. The meeting also addressed public safety, environmental concerns at a local park, and a range of upcoming community events and initiatives.
The council meeting opened with a commendation for several police officers who had demonstrated outstanding work in the community. Officers Andrew LK, Dipp, Na, Jacob Manente, and George Aad received recognition for their life-saving measures during a domestic violence dispute, where they successfully saved the life of a stabbed man. Officer Siman Jena was awarded for her commitment to community outreach, particularly through the Arrive Together program, which assists individuals experiencing mental health crises. Director Hubner thanked the officers for their dedication, and council members expressed appreciation for the positive impact of the officers’ training and actions on public safety.
Another topic of interest at the meeting was a resident’s concerns regarding delays in the opening of trails and a park at the Casby site, attributed to government bureaucracy and extensive paperwork required by state and federal agencies. The council president assured the resident that the township was pushing for the park to open. The resident also inquired about the potential impact of changes to the Open Public Records Act by elected officials in Trenton, to which the council deferred to experts, stating it was premature to comment without knowing the final bill version.
The council discussed a bond ordinance for $2.5 million related to the water and sewer utilities. A resident questioned the acquisition of a computer system and whether it would be based on a competitive bid. The council responded affirmatively. The council also adopted an ordinance for the designation of handicap parking on Camelot Drive and William Street and approved the Woodbridge Area 6 Reg Development Plan. Questions were raised about the tax implications of changing property from residential to commercial use and whether there would be a tax abatement.
Environmental concerns were brought up by a resident regarding a local park. Public safety was also a concern, especially relating to crime in apartment buildings. However, a council member refuted the claim, stating that crime reporting was being addressed, and the police department was engaging with the community.
The council meeting included announcements of numerous community events, such as summer concerts, the charity fun mini golf Gala, and the Baron Art Center’s People and Paintings gallery exhibition. The Police Department’s upcoming events, such as the annual junior Police Academy, bicycle rodeo, and National Night Out, were discussed. Additionally, Memorial Day services were announced, along with the groundbreaking of a new healthcare facility by Hackensack Meridian Health and Wellness Center and the opening of new businesses.
The meeting also covered procedural items such as tax overpayments, a shared services agreement for animal control, traffic ordinances, and refund requests, and concluded with the approval of resolutions related to divisions of streets, sewers, parks, sanitation, and equipment repair supervisors. The council members expressed thanks for support and involvement in community events, and the meeting ended with a motion to close.
